And here comes another one. An unofficial PC port of Super Smash Bros. Brawl is now in development. The project aims to bring Nintendo’s classic fighting game to the PC as a native app.
PC players can boot the game, load saves, and use all menus tested so far. VS battles also work. The port can run the game’s attract demos and start Classic Mode. The opening of The Subspace Emissary is also playable, including its cutscenes and first battle.
The PC port also supports popular mods. Project+ and Project+Ex can load from a virtual SD card. You can play matches with their own characters and stages. REX, Brawl Minus, and Legacy XP also load in the same way. This gives players more ways to enjoy the game.
One of the best features is its graphics support. You can raise the render size up to 8 times the normal value. The game also supports 16:9 screens and can fill windows on ultrawide displays up to 32:9. This gives you more space to see the stage on the sides. The menus and HUD also keep the right shape.
The port uses 120 FPS frame interpolation by default. You can also try 180 and 240 FPS. Keep in mind that the game itself still runs at 60 FPS. The higher frame rates come from frame interpolation.
You also get a menu right inside the game. You can open it with F10 or the Home key on a controller. It has options for graphics, sound, controls, and gameplay. You can also manage cheats, mods, online play, and updates. There is no need to use a separate launcher. The game starts right away.
The port also adds useful tools to make play easier. You can save and load save states with three slots. You can also speed up the game by 2x to 4x. Menus can also run faster. For those who want to change how the game plays, there is support for Gecko codes. You can turn these cheats on or off while playing. Nine tested codes are included.
The controls are also very flexible. Any gamepad is seen as a GameCube controller. You can change its button layout in the game. You can also use a keyboard and mouse for any player. Real Wii Remotes work over Bluetooth, too.
To install the port, you need your own copy of the game. It accepts ISO, CISO, and WBFS files, as well as game folders that have already been unpacked. The port can also update itself. Your saves are kept in a folder called UserData\NAND. This uses a file layout that is like the one found on a real Wii.
Another key feature is its virtual SD card. It is stored in UserData\SD and lets the game use its own SD card features. It also makes it easy to load mods that need an SD card. The port even supports online play with other players who use Brawl Recompiled.
You can go ahead and download it from here.
