Silent Hill PSX Original

Unofficial Native PC Version of Silent Hill 1999 Released

SlickAmogus has just released the first public version of an unofficial native PC version of the first Silent Hill game that came out on PSX in 1999. This will let you experience Silent Hill on PC without the need to use an emulator.

This first public version will let you play the game from start to finish. The in-game 3D world is being rendered correctly. Textured environments, fog, snow/particle effects, trees, buildings, lamp posts, and ground geometry all look the way they were meant to.

Player movement is now fully functional. The PC version supports proper collision-based walking and running, and wall collisions work well in most situations. Floor height detection and stair movement are also working correctly.

Combat is in good shape, too. The handgun, hunting rifle, and shotgun all work reliably. Melee weapons can also hit enemies as expected. In addition, several character animations appear to function correctly. These include break-free animations, death animations, and enemy grab sequences.

The only major issues affect the Chainsaw and Rock Drill, which still do not work properly. Some boss visual effects also need more polishing. The audio may loop incorrectly occasionally. Ending cutscenes are also glitchy. So yeah, this isn’t 100% perfect yet. Nevertheless, it’s fully playable, from start to finish.

It’s worth noting that the PC version has support for high resolutions, high refresh rates, and uncapped FPS. From what I’ve seen, it does not seem to support the mouse. Then again, this is a game with fixed camera angles. I’ve finished the original PC versions of Resident Evil 1 and 2 on PC with the Keyboard. So, I’m pretty sure that Silent Hill can also be enjoyed with just the Keyboard.

For some strange reason, I thought the first Silent Hill came out on PC. Apparently, I was wrong. From the looks of it, Konami did not start bringing the series to PC until Silent Hill 2.

Anyway, you can go ahead and download this unofficial PC port of Silent Hill from this link.

To play it, you’ll have to extract its zip file. Next, place your game data inside the gamedata folder and rename the file to Silent Hill (USA).bin. This step is required. Even if you are using the PAL/European version of the game, you must still use this exact file name. After that, you can launch SilentHillPC_Launcher to configure the game, or run SilentHillPC directly to start playing. Keep in mind that you may need to launch the game once before the launcher works properly. This is due to the Windows SmartScreen protection.

In case you are into projects like these, you can also download the unofficial PC port of Super Mario 64Mario Kart 64Crash Team Racing, and Duke Nukem: Zero Hour. You can also play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeMajora’s MaskPerfect Dark, and Jak & Daxter. And that’s not all of them. We also have the unofficial PC ports of Mario Party 4Sonic UnleashedGoldenEye 007, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Smash Bros 64.

Have fun and stay tuned for more!
