Classic God of War PS2 feature

The First Classic God of War Game Has Been Ported to PC

Earlier this month, we informed you about an unofficial PC port of God of War 3 Remastered. And now it’s time for an unofficial PC version of the first classic God of War game that came out on PS2 in 2005.

The PC port comes with a handy launcher. It guides you through the setup in just a few steps. You need your own copy of the game, as the project does not include any game files. The launcher can download the tools and files it needs, prepare your game disc, and build the PC version for you. It also supports some fan-made translations. If you add more than one supported game disc, you can pick which language to play.

The port offers many ways to improve how the game looks and feels. You can change the game’s internal resolution, use sharp scaling, and turn on FXAA and anisotropic filtering. You can also pick from Performance, Balanced, and Quality graphics profiles. The game has a borderless full-screen mode, a frame rate counter, VSync, and an FPS limit. Most graphics options can be changed while you play.

You also get full keyboard and mouse support. The PC port lets you set your own keys and choose between classic and modern gamepad layouts. You can also map each button as you like. An in-game menu, which you can open with F1, gives you quick access to graphics options, cheats, and save tools. You can also make copies of your memory card saves.

Performance is a key part of this project. The game has a 60 FPS target, and the port uses several tricks to make it run faster. These include code that is built while you play and profile-guided optimization (PGO). The first play session also records game code and performance data. The final build then uses that data to run better. You can also use tools to speed up areas you have already visited.

Version 3.0.0 brought a major set of changes. One of its main features is Early FINISH. It lets the game prepare the next frame while the current one is still being drawn. This can improve speed by about 20% in heavy fights. PGO was also added to the install process. Tests showed gains of about 5% on average and 13% in combat.

This update also made the build process much faster. The first-play setup and PGO step went from about 63 minutes to 24 minutes in tests. It added a new F1 menu with live graphics settings, cheats, and save tools. Other changes included better scaling, FXAA support, borderless full-screen mode, quick graphics profiles, save tools, bug reports, and many fixes to memory, sound, and game code.

Version 3.0.1 builds on those gains. It makes the VU1 code faster while keeping the same results. Tests showed average speed rising from about 51 FPS to 57 FPS. Heavy fights also improved from about 51 FPS to 55 FPS. The update also cuts the number of thread wake-ups by about 150,000 per second. This gave combat another 3.5% boost in tests.

Version 3.0.1 also makes the install process easier. It avoids downloading the same files twice, improves support for PCs with four or fewer threads, and warns users if their CPU lacks SSE4.2. Older Intel graphics chips can now use the GPU renderer instead of the much slower software mode. The launcher also handles updates and rebuilds better.

The project is still a work in progress. It does not reach a steady 60 FPS in every scene, and some areas still need more testing. You may also see short pauses or sound gaps when moving between areas. Still, from what I’ve seen, you can play it from start to finish.

You can go ahead and download it from here.
