Although the first Gears of War game came out on PC, the rest of the original quadrology did not. By quadrology, I’m referring to Gears of War 1, 2, 3, and Judgment. But now, PC gamers can enjoy all these classic Gears of War games as they have been brought to PC thanks to PC recomps.
COGBox supports Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment. All three games are playable, with only a few known issues.
One of the best things about these PC ports is their graphics support. You can play at higher resolutions, with support for up to 5K. You can also use SMAA, NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS to improve image quality or boost speed. There is also a fast 1080p mode for PCs with weaker graphics cards.
The ports remove the original 30 FPS limit. You can use VSync and set an FPS limit to match your screen. AMD FSR Frame Generation is also available, but it is still very experimental. The project also supports HDR10, 21:9 ultrawide screens, 16x anisotropic filtering, and changes to the field of view. You can also turn motion blur, depth of field, and lens flares on or off.
COGBox also aims to make the games feel smooth. It saves translated shaders on your PC and builds graphics pipelines in the background. This helps reduce pauses when you enter new areas. The ports also support NVIDIA Reflex and AMD Anti-Lag 2 to reduce input lag. Direct3D 12 is the main graphics API, while Vulkan is available as an experimental option.
The project also adds many useful control options. You can play with a keyboard and mouse or use an Xbox or PlayStation controller. Mouse aiming is not limited by the speed of an analog stick. You can also change the keys and buttons. Gears of War 2 even supports split-screen play. All three games also support chapter select and their own title updates.
Another nice feature is support for DLC and mods. You can add DLC files from your own console copy. You can also install mods as ZIP files or folders. The launcher lets you turn mods on or off and change their load order. All 21 languages found in the US and European game releases are supported.
COGBox itself is more than just a launcher. It shows your games in a carousel and lets you add your own game files. It can check if you have the right game version and install the files for you. Each game has its own settings page, with clear notes for every option. The launcher also tracks your play time, backs up saves, and can create a report if a game crashes.
You can even use COGBox with a controller. It supports both Xbox and PlayStation pads, and its menus change the button names to match your pad. There is also an in-game menu that you can open with F1 or a controller shortcut. From there, you can change settings, restart a game, or quit.
You can download COGBox from here. As with all PC recomps, it does not contain any in-game assets. To play it, you’ll have to use your own disc images of these games.
Now, while COGBox is a cool project, I highly recommend trying the other PC ports of Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. These two PC ports are based on PC dev builds. As such, they may offer a better gaming experience. For Judgment, you can use COGBox.

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
