And here comes another unofficial PC port of another Nintendo Switch game. This time, we have an unofficial PC port of Metroid Dread. As such, PC gamers can now enjoy this Metroid game on PC without the need to use an emulator.
Thanks to this unofficial PC port, you can play the game with higher frame rates, custom settings, and support for many controllers. The latest version also adds new features and fixes several issues.
One of the biggest features is the frame rate cap. You can set it from 60 to 240 FPS. The port also supports 16:10 and 21:9 screens, so you can play on a wider range of monitors. You can change the screen size, frame rate, anti-aliasing, and volume while you play. The game also supports anisotropic filtering for sharper textures.
The port offers two graphics options: OpenGL and native Vulkan. OpenGL is the recommended choice, while Vulkan is still experimental. It also builds shaders before play to help reduce stutter. Cutscenes and loading screens can run at 60 FPS, too.
The PC port also has a handy settings screen. You can set up your controller, manage mods and texture packs, and back up your saves. It supports Xbox controllers, Switch Pro controllers, Joy-Cons, DualShock 4, DualSense, and 8BitDo pads. It can also show the right button icons for each controller. You can pick an icon set or let the game choose one for you. These icon packs can be added from GameBanana with one click.
The latest update adds a few more useful features. You can now skip any cutscene the game lets you skip, even on your first playthrough. You can also turn on an FPS counter from the settings screen or the in-game menu. The port can add itself to Steam as a non-Steam game, with its own icon. It also lets you aim with the mouse while holding the aim button.
The update also fixes several issues. Cutscenes that run at 30 FPS should now play without uneven frame pacing on high-refresh-rate screens. Lighting has been fixed to remove dotted patterns in glowing areas. The game’s reverb effect now works as intended, so sounds no longer play dry and far too loud.
The port also has a tool to help track stutter. Its performance log now records every frame that takes more than 50 milliseconds to render. This can help the developer find the cause of slowdowns. The game uses about 2.7 GB of memory, plus around 1 GB for its runtime and graphics driver. The developer recommends 8 GB of RAM. The port can run on PCs with 4 GB, but loading may take longer.
You can go ahead and download it from here. To run it, you will need your own dumped copy of Metroid Dread, updated to version 2.1.0.
