And the time has come. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are the two Zelda games that most PC fans want to play. This was already possible thanks to the Nintendo Switch emulators. But now, PC gamers can play and enjoy Breath of the Wild natively on PC, without the need to use an emulator.
This fan project brings new PC features, better frame rates, and more ways to change how the game looks and feels. It is still in early testing, though. According to its creator, you can now play through the Great Plateau.
The port runs at 60 FPS by default. You can also pick 30, 90, or 120 FPS, or remove the frame rate limit. The game speed stays the same when you change this setting. This gives you more choice than the Switch version, which runs at 30 FPS.
You can also raise the image size to native 4K or use AMD FSR 1 to boost frame rates. The port supports windowed, borderless, and full-screen modes. You can also resize the game window to fit your screen.
The PC port has a shader and pipeline cache. This means that over time, you will not be getting any shader compilation stutters. The first time a new effect appears, though, you will still see a short stutter as the game builds its cache.
Savage Wind Recomp also adds PC-friendly menus and settings. You can change options in the game’s own menu, while a separate tool handles setup and settings. Once the game is set up, you can start it right away. You can also use a keyboard and mouse, with options to change mouse speed and other controls.
As I said, right now, you can explore the Great Plateau, with its terrain, water, sky, shadows, map, and status bars. The project has not yet been tested past this area, so later parts may have bugs or crashes. From what I’ve seen, the game feels and looks stable. However, consider this a beta, or even an alpha, release. Things will get way better once we get a couple of updates for it.
For now, the port is only for Windows. It does not support DLC, and it only works with game version 1.8.2. It also needs a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 support, a CPU with AVX2 support, and about 35 GB of free space.
You can download the PC port from this link. As always, it does not contain any in-game assets. To play it, you’ll need your own copy of the Switch game, updated to version 1.8.2.
