Ah, Resident Evil 2, the 1998 survival-horror classic adored by millions! And now the 2019 survival-horror classic-in-the-making adored by ever growing multitudes. Two games, both excellent, but how does this new RE2 compare? Thankfully, it retains the original survival-horror charm while also delivering a modern experience. Unfortunately, a bit too much outdated design causes it to occasionally stumble and fall like a clumsy zombie. Read on to discover the joys and bugbears of 2019’s RE2. Below – Review
It seems our industry is going through a phase lately where we value games for how much ‘git gud’they can extract from the player. New speedrunning videos constanly flood my YouTube feed, 16-bit games are making an unexpected comeback, and esports champions are regarded as gods in some circles. Then there is also the surge of new rogue-lites on Steam to consider. Continue reading Below – Review
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden Review
I was never a big fan of turn-based combat and isometric role playing games until I had the pleasure of playing XCOM and Divinity Original Sin. These games were frigging awesome sauce and I am almost certain Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden’s developers will agree with me. The Bearded Ladies (yes that is their glorious name) are the people behind it and if we want to be precise, the game is based on the Swedish (the devs are also Swedish btw) table-top RPG. The initial plan for the game was to be open-world but thankfully the devs decided against it. This is a niche game that borrows a lot of things from XCOM and gives it a very interesting twist. Darksiders III – Review
If the action-adventure genre were a record label, the first two Darksiders games would be ‘Greatest Hits’ albums. Vigil Games seemingly collected all their favorite mechanics from games they loved, and then wove an epic saga with The Horsemen of The Apocalypse around these ideas. Their games were like the definition of flattery through imitation. Continue reading Darksiders III – Review
Fallout 76 Review: Semi-Wasted, Semi-Wonderful
By now you’ve likely seen Fallout 76’s overwhelmingly bad reception. Mainstream sites have roasted it, the internet has mocked it, and retailers have slashed the price of it. The oft-heard critical terms are glitchy, soulless, broken, cash-grab, early-access, and junk. All these and more hang over Fallout 76 like a condemning toxic cloud. Continue reading Fallout 76 Review: Semi-Wasted, Semi-Wonderful
Hitman 2 Review: It’s a Hit, Man…2
It was many years ago that I first played as Agent 47, and I found the game series interesting but a bit too slow in how you must have the patience to wait for the right moment to kill your designated victim. I know, I know; these are stealth games so they have to be slow-paced. Given the pacing and my lack of skill in this genre, I’d just dabble in prior Hitman games back when game magazines would come with demo discs and such. Continue reading Hitman 2 Review: It’s a Hit, Man…2
Ashen Review: It’s Dark Souls but Much Worse
Last Thursday at The Game Awards the announcement was made: Ashen is out now, exclusive to the Epic Games Store (why?). This game, years in the making, is suddenly unleashed upon the world with almost no marketing and not available on the world’s largest game store (Steam). A dubious start. So what is this game, and is it worth the wait? Continue reading Ashen Review: It’s Dark Souls but Much Worse
Underworld Ascendant Review
Underworld Ascendant is a first person action role playing game, developed by Otherside Entertainment. You might know the developers from the predecessors Ultima Underworld I & II. You might also know them as Looking Glass from other titles such as System Shock and Thief; games that even today are being held in high regard by many old-school gamers.
Overkill’s The Walking Dead Review
I love zombies; Dawn of the Dead is one of my favourite films and the first Resident Evil is one of my favourite games. I have played too many zombie games and even if the whole zombie genre is becoming a bit tiresome, in general, I still enjoy playing them… well most of them. I am also a huge fan of the TV show, even if the latest seasons dropped in quality. I have played all of Telltale’s (RIP) games except the final season and I even played “Survival Instinct” – oh yes I did.
Call of Cthulhu Review
“Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn” (“In his house at R’lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.”). H. P. Lovecraft’
No, this is not a first person shooter starring the lord Cthulhu; trying to save the world in the name of duty. It is a very different game, a much slower game so some will love it and some will hate it. I did neither of those… I just fell asleep in my chair… twice.
