Prey HD Remaster Mod-5

Prey gets the “HD Remaster” treatment thanks to this mod

Modder ‘y2keeth’ released a 2.85GB HD overhaul mod for the first Prey game. This mod attempts to improve the graphics of the game by improving its textures and 3D models, as well as adding full shadows map files.

In order to showcase this graphics overhaul mod, the modder released the following screenshots and video.

The first Prey game came out in 2006 and was using a modified version of id Tech 4. In case you did not know, id Tech 4 was the engine that id Software used in Doom 3.

As said, this is a must-have mod for all those that want to replay this classic first-person shooter. Speaking of older games, we also suggest downloading this HD Texture Pack for F.E.A.R. There are also HD Project Mods for Dino Crisis, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Call of Duty and Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2. 1. I remember buying the retail DVD version of this back in 2006 and I think I played it on a Geforce 6800 if I’m not mistaken. It was an awesome game.

    1. The gameplay and guns were definitely better than Doom 3, but I think Doom 3 had better art more interesting environment designs.

  2. Some comparison shots would have been nice and the linked video has dogshit picture quality. Also the framerate of the capture is all over the place. Is this modder working on some potato machine? Nevertheless it is always appreciated when people work on this game. Seems PREY has been almost forgotten in recent years which is a shame as it is a great game (still hoping for some fan-made sequel at some point.)

    1. Last time I played it was on Windows 7 and it worked just fine. Either have it installed in that or perhaps in Linux since I heard they run older games better than modern Windows OS does.

      1. Ah, I see. Thanks for the info. So I imagine most games with SecuROM gotta go through the same process. Which a little mundane but it’s better than nothing. Luckily I have both the retail copy and Steam version so I don’t have to go through all that hassle. The hardware aspect might be troublesome though. I didn’t think the type of motherboard would matter for any game.

Gonna keep a note of that since I know it’ll come in handy one day. PGW, WSGF and Mod DB are sites I’ve used for a while. Pretty useful to get the most out of your experiences.

        1. Yeah noticed the info on PGW. Seems like it’s a necessity nowadays to have an additional PC with older components for compatibility purposes. It’s pretty unrealistic to expect most classic titles to support modern hardware and software. At least without community effort and sites like GOG that try to preserve them.

      2. I’ve tried using all sorts of emulators, and the game refused to recognize it :/ Even edited the config files to look, specifically for different names and nothing.

        1. Emulators? I guess you’re referring to Linux OS. Perhaps try to go through all the steps mentioned by Latex in the responses to my comments. Otherwise it might just be a motherboard or any other hardware conflict with the game.

  3. Prey is insane. You can downsample this game to crazy levels like 8k and it still runs blazing fast. It looks amazing to have a 4k monitor run at 8k. Aliasing doesn’t exist.

  4. Nice. I definitely wanna play this game again at some point and try to get my mates to play it. Games like this and the Riddick ones are criminally underrated. The visuals still hold up till today (back when they hired people with actual talent and passion to innovate). Level designs are amazing, story is well written and has heart. The soundtrack is one of the best I’ve heard in gaming. Great use of licensed music too.

I wish they could make more stuff like this but the state of Western civilisation is abysmal. At least we have things coming from Asia and certain parts of Europe to look forward to next year. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and Scorn might fill that void.

  5. You can still buy steam keys for this game off G2A for like $2 fyi. Bought one a few months ago and the game worked perfectly fine.

  6. I played this on release day. D@mn I’m old. I still remember the wonderfully crafted opening scene at the pub. And the groundbreaking platforming and weird weapons. What I liked the most were the scenes where you would go into a sort of trance-state and meet a Navaho elder in a desert setting who would teach you new skills and upgrade your sh*t. To this day, this is the most original way of “skill progression” in gaming.

  7. By improving texture I hope they don’t just mean adding more gloss, effects and filters to them like a lot of halfarssed graphics mods for other ID Tech 4 games such as Doom 3, the textures need to be reworked to a HD look to be better.
