Remember those 3DFX days? Do the words ‘POD’ and ‘WipeOut’ ring any bell? Well, get ready old-school PC racers as Death Road looks like a mix between POD and WipeOut. To reach the finishing line before the others, we will not only need to be the fastest on the route but also use the available arsenal which contains six basic weapons, including, among others, machine guns, plasma guns and tactical missiles. Now this is what I call an impressive tech demo. 3D artist Tor Frick has created an amazing sci-fi lab environment with only two textures. Frick used Epic’s Unreal Development Kit (UDK) and tried to push texture-reusage, without having to rely on alot of different materials. According to the artist, the entire scene uses 2 256*512 textures, one for diffuse and masks, and one for normalmap. The end result is gorgeous and shows how easily artists can overcome technical limitations. In fact, this lab environment will remind you of those in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The difference between them is that this tech demo uses only two textures, whereas Square Enix’s game used a lot of different textures. Simply amazing! The company will announce a ‘more specific’ release date once they arrive at the final test phase.
