Today marks the end of an era for both id Software and John Carmack, as the legendary programmer has left id Software (for good this time). Carmack joined the Oculus Rift team back in August and wanted to remain  a technical advisor id Software, however that did not work out. As a result of that, Carmack has left id Software, the company that he co-founded alongside Tom Hall and John Romero. Earlier yesterday, John Carmack shared his thoughts on AMD’s Mantle. During Nvidia’s Montreal event, Carmack claimed that although he would be tempted to use Mantle, he would not do such a thing at this point. Carmack claimed that it’s not stupid – for AMD – to attempt something like that, however he believed that Sony and Microsoft would not embrace it. But why is Carmack against this new API? John Carmack Has Joined The Oculus Rift Team As A CTO

The Oculus Rift Team announced today that John Carmack will be officially joining them as their new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Carmack co-founded id Software, served as lead programmer on Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and the Quake series, and is one of the pioneers of 3D graphics. It has not been confirmed yet whether Carmack has left id Software or not (ninja edit: Carmack will not leave id Software, though his role remains unknown. John Carmack still believes that a lot of next-gen games will run at 30fps

As Carmack said back then, a lot of games that will be released on next-generation consoles will still run at 30fps and not at 60s. Do you remember that awful meme that the human eye could not see more than 24fps? Well, by now we all know that it was inaccurate and laugh when someone mentions something like that. And it seems that John Carmack got tired of that meme. That theory was based on the the fact that movies were played in 24Hz and looked quite smooth. Well, the truth is that even those 24Hz movies are not as smooth as you think they are, and everything will change when James Cameron Peter Jackson will present the 48Hz version of The Hobbit.
