Back in February, we informed you about an AI-enhanced high resolution texture pack for Hexen. Created by modder ‘gmh4589’, that texture pack significantly improved the textures of this classic shooter. And today, I’m happy to report that there is a new AI-enhanced texture pack for Heretic.
This AI-enhanced texture pack is created by modder ‘grandgreed’ and aims to bring a new look for in-game content of Heretic. The main focus of this pack is to preserve all of the original details and lacks any third-party modifications.
The end result is amazing and this pack is a must-have for everyone that wants to replay this classic FPS game. Now my dream of replaying all these beloved old-school games will be complete if we get similar AI-enhanced texture packs for Blood and Duke Nukem 3D. So far we’ve gotten new texture packs for Doom, Hexen, Star Wars Dark Forces II, Deus Ex, Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Hell, even Turok 2 received an AI-enhanced texture pack.
The modder has released some comparison screenshots between these high quality textures and the vanilla ones that you can find below. Those interested can also download the pack from here.
Have fun!

This game really needs that doom 2016 got
id argue duke nukem needs that more, but yeah ok, it has to be nonlinear though in order to work.
Also true . good hustle
I just have to say this: EXCELLENT work ! VERY impressive modding done. I guess it’s time to replay this classic old-school FPS.
Thanks for posting this, @JOHN……That’s why DSOG ROCKS when it comes to the core of PC GAMING news, modding, and other similar indie stuff. ? ?
Oh, come on now…It’s not that bad though, IMO..I’m kind of demoralized now after reading your comment.
Though, I respect your point of view as well. I really want to try out this MOD, ’cause it looks cool to me (at least better than the original). I don’t mind the “paint brush” feel/look.
Seeing large pixels instead of eyes in 1080p doesnt feel right. Those sprites were never designed for such large resolutions
Yeah, when I played System Shock 1 Enhanced Edition, everything was too smooth and plasticky. Turning down the resolution helped a lot. Game went from tacky to really cool-looking. Also, big pixels nicely hide the emptiness/crudeness of the scenery in old titles.
Wow. Just wow. This looks 100% exactly like the original, just higher res. This is great.
Yeah this AI stuff really is like magic on 2d games, everything else upto this point had that emulator 2xsai or similar scaling giving it blurred or Plasticine kinda look. This just takes the original and just makes it better. The final fantasy 7 one was pretty impressive too.
and if you want gameplay try brutal hexen rpg
We could use a new Hexen game…
Once depixelated, the visuals look plasticky, also they remind me of a typical cheap mobile game art style.
Cool experiment, though. And it’s most impressive in pixelated games like this.
By the way, I don’t understand how a few pixels here and there can be a dealbreaker. If you don’t like it at first, you’ll get used to it. It’s not radioactive. Indie games with pixelated throwback graphics exist for a reason, and here you can marvel at the retro visuals in their original glory!
Didn’t really liked this one. I think it was not that great translation lost some character.
Dear John Papadopoulos. You should be ashamed… To attribute the work of modder grandgreed to other people? Even the image was stolen… Before publishing the article, at least they would have learned what it all came from.

My bad. There were actually two AI-enhanced texture packs for Hexen (one from gmh4589 and another by grandgreed). Article has been fixed.
