Donkey Kong fans, here is something special for you today. Brian Tate has released unofficial PC ports of the first classic SNES Donkey Kong Country games. So, if you’ve never experienced these platform games, I highly recommend trying them.
What’s really cool is that all three games support widescreen resolutions. The original games used a 4:3 aspect ratio. These unofficial PC ports fix that issue. And no, the widescreen view is not just a zoomed-in version of the 4:3 image. Instead, we get proper widescreen support.
As with all recompilations, these three PC ports do not contain any in-game assets. To use them, you’ll have to own the original games and provide your own ROM file.
Needless to say, we won’t provide any download links to the ROM files. So, don’t bother sharing any in the Comment section. However, I’m certain most of you will be able to find them via a simple Google search.
Since I’m a big Donkey Kong Country fan, I can really appreciate these PC ports. To be honest, I always thought the SNES versions were perfect. So, these PC ports do not add any performance or visual upgrades. Still, they could open the door to mods. For example, I’d love to see someone release an HD texture pack that replaces all the characters with their CG artwork.
I don’t expect a modded version to look like this AI video. Something like that would need a full remake. Still, I can hope that someone finds a way to get close to this level of quality.
You can go ahead and download them from here, here, and here. At the end of the article, you can also find videos for Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3.
In case you are into projects like these, you can also download the unofficial PC ports of Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Crash Team Racing, and Duke Nukem: Zero Hour. You can also play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Perfect Dark, and Jak & Daxter.
And that’s not all of them. We also have the unofficial PC ports of Mario Party 4, Sonic Unleashed, GoldenEye 007, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Silent Hill, and Super Smash Bros 64. Last month, we shared the unofficial PC ports of Gears of War 2 and Syphon Filter. Earlier this month, we shared the PC ports of Diddy Kong Racing and Ace Combat 6. Finally, you can download the unofficial PC versions of Blue Dragon, Tekken 3, Mario Kart Wii, and Pokemon Crystal.
Have fun!
