New Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay footage showcases Katana melee combat system

Now here is something that completely passed under our radar. Last week, a 20-seconds gameplay footage from Cyberpunk 2077 surfaced, showing off the game’s Katana melee combat system. And while this video is really short, we’re pretty sure that most Cyberpunk 2077 fans will find it interesting.

As we can see, players can use their Katana in order to deflect bullets. Moreover, players will have a stamina bar, and they will be able to decapitate their enemies.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an RPG that will mainly feature first-person cut-scenes. While there will be some rare third-person cut-scenes, all of the conversations will be in first-person perspective. Moreover, CD Projekt RED has confirmed that it will add a multiplayer mode via a post-launch update.

The game will be also using real-time ray tracing and DLSS 2.0, and promises to be a tech showcase. For instance, the game will have advanced shadow effects from long range shadows and contact shadows, to new Houdini physics simulations for particle effects, fluids, cloth, and more. Now while we don’t know whether these ray tracing effects will be available at launch, we do know that the game will appear on NVIDIA’s streaming service, GeForce Now, at launch day.

Do note that the following gameplay footage was not present in the full 25-minute preview gameplay video we shared on June 28th. So yeah, this is brand new gameplay footage you haven’t seen before.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on November 19th.

Enjoy!

      1. That’s probably why they delayed it. They need to work on the melee. It’s not that hard to tweak you just need to create a sense of momentum. I feel like they need to have some sort of parry system for the bullets. instead of the sword just sitting in one spot.

      2. Is funny how they can make guns (in what they showed so far they dont look like anything special, the gunplay looks like from Borderlands 3) but not swords…specially when they made 3 games with swords as your main weapon, and you can make melee weapons in first person feel great and impactful, it can be done, like in Dark Messiah or Shadow Warrior.

    1. No, you are right…that melee animations look amateur as f*ck. The city itself looks empty and lifeless.

  1. night time and asian architecture is much better than gta v 2077 footage they have been showing.

        1. How did this feud between you two come about? Yall used to be buddies or is this just kidding around stuff.

        1. oh yes having the second shot fired from a weapon hit something in a parallel universe, what a great gunplay mechanic.

  2. “When they were targeting Win10 and DX12 ‘

they claim game will work on win7 with dx12

Anyway graphics aside the style is spot on.

  3. this looks bad, skyrim type of animations bad, add the fact the the enemies are bullet-sponges, the combat doesn’t look promising at all; i will definitely mod the game to remove the bulletsponging mechanics

  4. Old news but yeah it’s bad, like really really bad. Shadow Warrior (2013) had the best combination of impactful katana slice and stab attacks paired with dash ability.

Also on official CDPR forums moderators are in full denial/damage control mode:
    1) When people call out this game’s poor FPS gunplay and melee combat mechanics looks bad they double down on explaining to each and everyone that this game is RPG first and foremost so those mechanics are not orioritized in roleplaying games.
    2) When people call out the fact that the game is FPS first and foremost because 95% of demos is gunplay, melee or walking/driving and cutscenes with 5% at the most relegated to roleplaying then mods say that RPG is a broad term and by their definition any game that has even miniscule roleplaying elements can be considered an RPG.

It is not surprising at all when some mods there are active shareholders of CDPR. When you call out the lack of free speech and freedoms to speak your mind they ban you and condescendingly “explain” that free speech is solely about critisizing the government without fear of being persecuted by law.

    1. Being an RPG as justification for poor gunplay is bullcrap.
You have from STALKER (love the bullsh*t ballistics), Deus Ex Mankind Divided (pretty solid, each gun feels right) and even Fallout 4 (awful game, but the gunplay was way better than in 3 vanilla).

      1. I concur. But CDPR forums is not the place to go against the party line and critisize the game in any way. Also allusions to political decisions made by the company are also prohibited. LOL – in relation to the game the plot of which revolves around the future where rebellion against authority is the common trope. Hypocrites.

        1. Sounds like another echo chamber, i remember how slowly the forum for Witcher died…i bet the same will happen with CP77

          1. There are great and insightful posts from unbiased people and even then you can tell they are forcing themselves to walk the line so as not to get banned. They are minority though with the other two groups represented by mods (who side with CDPR 99,9% of the time) and the most populated group which seems like prepubescent teens that consider Witcher 3 a mature game just because there’s nudity in it.

      2. STALKER isn’t considered an RPG though, there are just some light elements of the genre in it.

  5. I won’t be using a Katana then. Blocking bullets with a Katana is laughable and would just pull me out of immersion.
