NVIDIA announces Quake 2 RTX, first official screenshots and details

Back in January, we informed you about a mod for Quake 2 that added real-time ray tracing effects. Created by former NVIDIA intern Christoph Schied, a Ph.D. student at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, Q2VKPT was the first playable game that is entirely raytraced and efficiently simulates fully dynamic lighting in real-time. And today, NVIDIA has announced a new version that will be based on it. Continue reading NVIDIA announces Quake 2 RTX, first official screenshots and details

This mod aims to bring high quality 2K textures to Quake 2, first comparison screenshots released

The Quake 2 RP Team is currently working on a promising high quality texture pack for id Software’s classic shooter, Quake 2. This pack aims to introduce new textures as much as possible close to original but with new shaders and 2K resolution (textures are made from scratch using Zbrush and Substance Painter). Mod enables real-time ray tracing RTX effects in Quake 2 for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs

Back in October 2018, we informed you about the Path Tracing mod for Quake 2 that could run on the new high-end gaming graphics card from NVIDIA, the GeForce RTX2080Ti. Unfortunately, though, that Path Tracing renderer could not take advantage of the RT cores, resulting in really low performance. Thankfully though, a group of people has released a new special version that takes advantage of the RTX GPUs. Here is Quake 2 Path Tracing running on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti at 1920×1080

YouTube’s ‘Thavex’ has shared a video, showing Quake 2 Path Tracing running on the latest high-end GPU, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti. In case you weren’t aware of, this real-time path tracing is possible thanks to Amietia; a from-scratch GPU-based pathtracer created specifically for Quake 2. Quake 2 looks absolutely stunning – and noisy as hell – with real-time GPU pathtracing renderer

Path tracing and ray tracing are two renderers that we strongly believe will benefit video-games in one or two decades. Yeah, we are talking about something that some people may never experience, however real-time pathtracing is capable of producing incredible reflections, shadows, and global illumination effects. And gamers can get an idea of what pathtracing is all about as Edd Biddulph has been working on a GPU pathtracer for Quake 2.
