Super Mario 64 ReRendered screenshots-1

This unofficial remaster of Super Mario 64 will make your jaw drop

Mario fans, here is something for you today. The project lead of the Super Mario 64: ReRendered project, Bradley, has shared the following WIP screenshots. And believe me when I say this. Super Mario 64 has never looked this good.

These screenshots showcase Super Mario 64 with a new lighting system, new textures, and some new highly detailed character models. And, as you will see, this is exactly what you’d expect from an official remaster of this classic Nintendo 64 title.

In a way, the new 3D models reminded me of Render96. Render96 is a free-to-play fan modification for Super Mario 64. The goal of this project is to match the game’s promotional artwork during the late 1990s. The team has recreated every model and asset using images found online from the Nintendo 64 era. You can get the latest version of Render96 and the HD Texture Pack from here and here.

Now contrary to Render96, Super Mario 64: ReRendered features a more advanced lighting system. These early screenshots look lovely, so I’m certain that even the die-hard SM64 purists will find them cool. Sadly, though, there is still no ETA on when this mod will come out. From what I know, this project has been in development for around a year. Ten months ago, Bradley shared a video that shows off the game’s intro (I’ve included that video at the end of the article).

All in all, this looks like a really promising project. This is exactly what I’d love to see from an official remaster of Super Mario 64. I can also assume that this will be based on the unofficial PC port of the game. As such, PC gamers will be able to enjoy it once – and if – it ever comes out.

Speaking of Super Mario 64, you should also try this Super Mario Bros Remake. Then we have the Super Luigi 64 Mod. These mods should also work on the original N64 hardware console. However, what shocked everyone was this native DX12 unofficial port. Not only that but we also got an incredible Ray Tracing Version of it. Oh, and there are also mods that add HD Textures, a high-quality Mario 3D model, and better draw distance. So, be sure to give them a go until Super Mario 64: ReRendered comes out.

Enjoy!
