The Medium feature 2

The Medium’s Technical Level Designer talks about the evolution of horror games

The Medium is the latest psychological horror title from Bloober Team, who you might know from previous titles of the same genre such as the Observer, Blair Witch, and Layers of Fear 1 & 2. The Medium received generally favorable ratings, and now has a very positive rating on Steam.

In an interview with The Escapist, Technical Level Designer Vitalii Pryvalov said that the studio loves horror games, and more specifically psychological horror games.

According to Pryvalov these type of games “bring us to the edge between entertainment and psychology, allowing us not only to tell a compelling story but also to discover something about us, humans, something that lies below, unnoticed, unguarded”.

Layers of Fear was Bloober’s first horror game, and starting from there they evolved inside the horror genre, and also changed it from inside. “We are constantly improving our game formulas, building it on our previous titles and — throughout experiment — expanding it with genre-bending mechanics.”

The Medium features a dual-reality gameplay mechanic, which wasn’t possible before due to the limitations of a small independent studio. “As the company grew, one day we realized that nothing was preventing us from starting full production on such a title.”
