Take-Two has shut down the Grand Theft Auto IV Definitive Edition Mod

The team behind the Definitive Edition mods for the first four Grand Theft Auto games have revealed that the mod for GTA IV has been taken down.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Definitive Edition Mod was a graphical overhaul for Rockstar’s classic game. The mod attempted to improve the graphics of GTA 4 with new textures and effects. For what it’s worth, the Definitive Edition mods for the first three GTA games are still available for download.

Interestingly enough, GTA IV Ultimately Beautiful Edition has also been taken down. Now I don’t know the reasons why this particular mod is no longer available. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Take-Two is also responsible for this. After all, the company has shut down A LOT of mods for its classic Grand Theft Auto games.

Speaking of GTA 4, here are some cool mods that you can check out. This mod restores the game’s multiplayer experience, while this one brings the capital of Poland to the game. Moreover, there is a cool mod that adds to the game vehicles from 1950-1993, as well as a New York City Name-Conversion Mod. And lastly, iCEnhancer 4 & RevIVe Mod will most likely soon come out.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. We have Valve that totally supports mods for their games and they also put them on their Store, and then we have this idiots.

    1. I am ashamed with Rockstar, their glory days are far over, and though they have a chance to comeback and reclaim their title, it appears easy money means more to them than developing quality story driven adventures. Then everyone whom actually cares to polish their trash…. shut down. They should be thankful people are still obsessing over their IPs enough to devote their time into them. They show no love to those who love them…. sad.

      1. They’ve always hated the PC community, so modders are just a pest in their minds. And we know this since forever, so if you’re a PC gamer, NEVER, EVER buy anything R* related. Just like Adobe software, it’s ok to pirate their games!

  2. And people were sympathising with this company on GTA Forums, damn! people indeed has poor memory, they forget really quickly. Hope this one sticks in people’s mind.

  3. This is nothing different from McDonald’s suing people for feeding homeless, the absolute state of corporate greed.
Daily reminder that T2 not just stops from removing mods online, they doubles down and sue modders for alleged ‘Damages’ done to the company for freely enhancing their products.
If you support this company you are indirectly supporting the death and demise of PC modding community.

    1. ummm, not even close to accurate. McDonalds doesn’t own the rights to food. what a foolish comparison. Also, protecting your IP is not corporate greed, it’s a normal standard business practice, you don’t understand that because anyone that ever complains about corporate greed is just a worthless bum who doesn’t pull his/her own weight, yets finds the time to complain about companies (groups of people) that actually have their $#!+ together. lol corporate greed, what a moronic thing to say, all companies exist for 1 purpose, to make money, and as much of it as humanly possible. Not a complicated notion yet it is beyond the grasp (likely an intellect thing) of all these halfwits that actually say the words “corporate greed.”

  4. ProTip when making Mods: Don’t use marketing language, especially don’t call your mod “Definitive Edition” when there is an actual product the company sells with this terminology.

    That’s an instant lawyer activation.

  5. Anyone else remember when Rockstar said they wouldn’t ban people for using mods in GTAV single player, and then they did it anyway? Does the publisher filing DMCA takedown requests against mods really surprise anyone?

          1. Go ask the companies that “tried to set some examples” during the whole mp3 era debacle worked.

Nobody likes seeing corporations strong arm an individual, no matter what the individual has done. That would be brand suicide.

          3. nah they won’t. you clearly don’t remember what went down when the music industry decided to go after “small fish” to scare people away from unpaid mp3s and it was a PR nightmare. The first small fish ended up being a severely financially struggling single mother who downloaded a handful of songs. They ended up looking like monsters and a $#!+ton of people online went crazy on bootlegging mp3s out of spite. I remember reading comments of people downloading hundreds of albums out of spite and then just deleting them since they didn’t even want most of the mp3s they downloaded.

  6. This is why you FINISH your mod b4 talking about it. Srsly, how many times does this sort of thing need to happen b4 these ppl will learn?!

    1. I used to see this talking point being made about fan games from companies who are C&D heavy like Nintendo, sad to see it creeping into modding. Better to work on mod friendly games and companies instead.

      1. Even companies with a long track record of being okay with mods can flip at any moment. Just think about Bethesda. They already showed their true colors with the whole paid mods push years ago. I wouldn’t want to bet years of work on their continued policy of tolerating all kinds of mods.

  7. Kinda funny to see people aghast here over this news, and the continued support of this garbage publisher.

Talk about over-estimating the intellect of the average human being. Humanity is cattle, to be harvested by these corporations.

Don’t be surprised when the cattle continues to act like cattle, and fueling these companies with their money, while clapping happily like seals.

    1. In a sense, modders are part of cons00mers as well, making these games more appealing. I appreciate their efforts since it is free after all, along with the game.

      1. GTA 4 mods kinda incentivice you to pirate the game…the best mods are meant to run on the 1.0.4.0 version which is the one thats better optimized.

  8. Um…. how can they take down a mod? Were they using copyrighted material of some sort? If they were creating their own material, there is no legal angle to C&D them.

    1. No modder is wealthy and strong enough to combat the giant corporation like Take Two and their legion of lawyers for years in legal battle. Even if the modder is destined to win in legal warfare, it would only be possible after years or even over a decade worth of sweat, tears and millions of dollars. This is like the Sony vs Emulation back in days, Take Two is filing lawsuit first because they are backed by the legion of lawyers and no one is dare to confront them legally. Even if they loses in legal battle, the executives of Take Two would think gain is bigger than the loss, and achieved what they wanted to; damaging the modding community.
They already got what they want, destabilizing the modding community, and ruining modders’ lives.

      1. nah, if take2 lost then the implications would be huge, would reduce the risk of all modders from then on. Also, you don’t need a giant legal division to win a case, a single lawyer can defeat a whole legal team easily, it all boils down to the law, not the size of a legal team. More lawyers is not an easy win, the law doesn’t bend to those with a bigger team, never has, never will. The “large legal team” is just a scare tactic for those that don’t know any better. (also, cases do not take years, most are resolved in 1 court visit, only overly complicated cases that involve further factfinding or professional opinions can last years, and it’s not years of work, most of it is just waiting for the court dates.)

Also, lawsuits have never stopped gaming fans. ROMs are still dumped, even though there are people in jail for it. Doesn’t even work on movies since movies are still dumped and shared online even though there are people in jail for it. And one last point, unless he used copyrighted material, a modder cannot get into legal trouble since take2 does not have ownership of the mods, they belong to their creator. Patches are legal because they contain zero copyrighted material, same rule applies to mods that do not contain copyrighted material.

    2. Any company/person can send a C&D for any reason, it means that they are willing to sue you if you don’t stop what you are doing. It does not mean the company will win in court and it does not mean you already lost the case, if a C&D has no legal grounds, it will be dismissed in court. Which is why they sent it to mediafire, since they just take the file down without any argument (smart for mediafire to do that, for their own good,) but the mod creator himself did not get a C&D since take2 would not have the legal grounds to defend the C&D in court, assuming he does not use copyrighted take2 assets. Take2 was probably hoping he would take down the mod from the fear of the C&D sent to mediafire.

  9. Take Two recently:

-Talks about the diversity issue at E3 a few years ago

    – Has no problem pandering

    – Will cause headaches to consumers because of their nonsense

  10. It’s a bit weird that they didn’t receive an C&D e-mail from Take-Two before the files got deleted from MediaFire.

    1. That’s because he didn’t get a C&D, just the site storing the files. He is acting like he got one, but he didn’t.

  11. Are they gonna release GTA IV remaster?? Im worried if its true , they are so disocnnected with what their customer wanted this day, blinded with GTA Online stats

    1. Well, GTA IV would not be a remaster without Online, and imagine how many microtransactions and cosmetics they could stuff in as well.

  12. yeah so this company is dog sh*t and they skate by today on their former
glory. they intentionally botched the GTA Trilogy and used it’s poor
sales as an excuse to cancel the Red Dead and GTA4 remaster editions.
they take legal action against the modding community for having the
audacity to update the games they have allowed to languish. they beat
the dead bones of GTA5 for almost 10 years while ignoring the expansive
capabilities and immense potential of RDR2…

I’m happy to pirate their products and no longer give them any money.

    1. That’s some paranoia on display there, no company intentionally botches their products. No matter how much your crazy brain wants it to be true, it isn’t.

  13. What in the hell is the author of this talking about. He claims there are mods for the first 3 GTA games but he is full of crap, the site does not have a mod for gta1 nor gta2, it does have one for gta3. Is the author dumb enough to think gta3 is gta1 and vice cities is gta2 and san andreas is gta3? I can’t even grasp how someone can get that wrong.
