Now here is a pleasant surprise. MachineGames and id Software have released a new free expansion for Quake, called Dawn of the Machine. Dawn of the Machine is a brutal new episode building on id Software’s and MachineGames’ acclaimed work on Dimension of the Machine and Dimensions of the Past.
This new expansion is said to deliver ferocious combat, labyrinthine level design, and nightmarish realms that twist reality beyond recognition. This new episode promises to push the legacy of Quake even further.
Dawn of the Machine features 19 all-new maps across a cohesive campaign, alongside a brand-new soundtrack. It also comes with hidden secrets, a dedicated episode hub, and an all-new deathmatch map.
In Dawn of the Machine, Ranger is trapped in a dimension of endless illusion. He’s reliving the same violent cycles for what feels like lifetimes, dying thousands of times in a futile attempt to escape. Wearied but unbroken, he has heard rumour of The Nightmare Machine.
Beyond the hordes of monsters, twisted by an eternity in the Elder realms, lies the Machine. It is believed its destruction will shatter the illusion, finally breaking the loop.
Players will face new versions of familiar enemies, including the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, Blood Shambler, and more. Each one has new attacks and abilities. Some use heavy firepower, while others explode when they die. Every fight feels fresh and more dangerous.
Players will also get new weapons inspired by the classic Quake expansions. The Super Axe calls down lightning with repeated hits, while the Laser Cannon fires bouncing shots that can hit enemies from many angles.
In this expansion, time loops back on itself. Each time you return, the world changes in new ways.
As you collect runes, you can open paths that were locked before. This lets you revisit familiar areas, but with new routes, enemies, and hidden secrets. You can also find permanent health and ammo upgrades. These stay with you, so each loop makes you stronger.
You can also switch between different dimensions to solve puzzles, explore new areas, and uncover more secrets. Some enemies come back after they die, while others change into something even more dangerous. The game also throws unexpected challenges at you, so you must stay alert and adapt to survive.
Dawn of the Machine is available right now on Steam for free for everyone who owns Quake.
Have fun!
