Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout is still unplayable with keyboard & mouse

GUST Studios recently released a patch that aimed to improve the keyboard and mouse controls for Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout. However, and after testing the game’s latest version, we can confirm that the game is still unplayable with this control scheme.

Let’s start with the good news though. The game now has raw mouse input. What this means is that you will not experience any acceleration or smoothing issues.

Unfortunately, GUST Studio has not added full mouse support for the menus. Players can still navigate the menus via the mouse scroll wheel, so things are not that awful.

Our biggest gripe with Atelier Ryza, however, are the awful stuttering/frame pacing issues from which the game suffers. These stutters are due to the lack of a gamepad. According to reports, the game constantly “searches” for a gamepad, resulting in stutters every two seconds. The only way you can resolve this is by… connecting a gamepad. Yeap, you read that right; as soon as we connected an X360 controller, these stutters went away. Hilarious.

Not only that, but GUST Studios has not added proper keyboard and mouse on screen prompts. As such, you’ll have to write down the keys you’ll be assigning to the gamepad buttons, otherwise you won’t be able to play the game.

So yeah, while GUST Studios has added raw mouse input, it’s currently completely useless due to the awful stuttering issues that are caused by the lack of a gamepad. Moreover, the game is still unplayable with mouse and keyboard due to the gamepad button on screen indicators.
