Microsoft has released the latest insider build of Windows 10 and with it comes its new Game Mode. According to Microsoft, this mode targets performance enhancements in two ways, and it is currently supporting only a select number of games.
The two ways via which Microsoft targets to improve performance are: a) an increase overall framerate or peaks and b) an increase in average framerates or consistency.
Game mode has its own section in this latest insider build of Windows 10 in System Settings.
In order to enable Game Mode, players will have to press Windows+G in order to pull up the game bar and click into settings in order to enable it.
Game mode is currently available only to the members of Windows 10 Fast Ring, and will become available to everyone this Spring.

There’s mix messages. You can enable it via the windows 10 gaming settings AND the game bar. Does this mean you can just use the gaming settings option and turn off the game bar? or does the game bar need to be enabled?
Hopefully they clear up the confusion. I’d like to have the game mode enabled but with the game bar disabled.
The game bar is only there to enable it in games if the settings is off by default. Games like forza will recognize that it is on in the settings control panel and the game bar toggle won’t be necessary for such games.
Yeah that makes sense. Hopefully it does work like that but this is Microsoft after all.
Show us some benchmarks already!
They would show them if this mode would actually improve something, I don’t think it’s the case
So how does it really work? Wouldn’t setting the game process’ priority to high yield the same effect?
And why isn’t GPU entirely focused on the game unless you enable Game Mode? What does it even have to do in the background? Isn’t it just marketing talk?
process priority only affects CPU. They must be doing something special with the GPU. The GPU currently still has to process WDM (windows display manager) in the background when playing games to that the OS shows up when alt-tabbing. Maybe this mode works around that…idk. We’ll know soon enough.
Nobody here with a insider build to give us some impressions? 🙂
Unlike what dsogaming is reporting the Windows 10 insider build that adds the feature isn’t available.
Oh…
My!
“works with a select number of games”
Called it
Yea we all knew this before anyone called it. No one expects it to work with every game.
If you actually watched the video they say it works AUTOMATICALLY with a select number of games. You can force it on any game using the game bar. You didn’t call jack sh!t.
They’re trying really hard. It’s good. Now deliver something worth my time.
“regardless of the game they’re playing” This gives me hope that it wont be just for games from their store.
Let me simplify this and why they are doing it. UWP and it’s games on the store are borderless windowed. Borderless windowed costs you a few FPS because the background and game have to split some on GPU and CPU. It is not a ton of FPS but it can mean a smooth 60 and a stutterfest in a game that is properly threaded to use a CPU well. Witcher 3 is a good example. Well threaded game that can drop what seems like 3 FPS using Borderless.
They are going to tweak the values to make it more like exclusive fullscreen. You will still have the bennefits of Windowed and hopefully the performance of exclusive fullscreen. Should you expect gains in exclusive fullscreen? None. Gains in borderless windowed? Hopefully yes. It should apply to all borderless windowed games and that is what I would test as a journalist.
I really like how this insiders update rolls out to everyone else later this spring with the bugs worked out. They aptly named it, CREATORS update. If your not into M$ pulling data about your rig, I wouldnt bother. But having an OCed 6800k and OCed 1080 GTX with 3400mhz quad channel DDR, Logitech G920 Wheel, ButtKicker Gamer2 on the Seat for the most insane immersion while racing, if Gaming mode can help me get from Forza Ultra at 5K, to closer to 6k, I’ll risk it. For 20 minutes now over here in California I havent been able to get the update yet…3:38 am 1/26..
downloading now…..Thank god for wsop poker on facebook..
