During Gameinformers’s latest Far Cry 4 podcast, the creative director of FC4 Alex Hutchinson answered a lot of questions from GI’s readers. Hutchinson revealed new information about the map size, a possible extreme mode, the game’s splitscreen and MP modes, as well as some new gameplay details.
NeoGAF‘s member ‘sjay1994’ has done an incredible job listing them. Those interested can listen to GameInformer’s podcast here.
We’ve also included a new trailer for Far Cry 4 that was released yesterday.
Enjoy!
-The map size is relatively the same square footage of Far Cry 3’s rook island, however due to the mountainous regions, the map is far more dense than FC3.
-The team behind Far Cry views the games as more of a series than a franchise, as it doesn’t need to worry about narrative baggage. This factors in to what Dean Evans and his team are doing. It might not be blood dragon 2, but rather something unexpected
-When asked about temperature, Hutchinson said he would love to make an extreme far cry game akin to what the modding community might come up with. His ideas were you get hypothermia when in cold water, you contract diseases when certain animals bite you, permadeath, etc. However, the main game doesn’t have anything to do with these hardcore options, the team might consider making a mode for it if there is interest.
-No sharks in FC4…. but there are Demon Fish, and honey badgers.
-Thin air is a factor in some mountainous areas. You need to have oxygen in these areas, and you do not have much of it.
-There is an avalanche setpiece in the game, but players can not trigger them freely.
-When a player buys the PS4/PS3 version of FC4, they will get around 10 tickets called “Keys to Kyrat”,that you can give to friends. They will be able to download a limited version of FC4 that has all the co op content and everything but the single player content. They will only be able to play the limited version if you are playing the main version of FC4. Hutchinson is not sure, but Sony might implement a time box.
-No splitscreen co op.
-There is a competitive multiplayer in FC4. No details were given. The team views FC3 mp as unsuccessful, but are using lessons they learned to hopefully build a fanbase with FC4’s mp.
-You will unlock the wingsuit pretty early into the game
-In some of the games cinematics, players can interupt them with actions, however they player will not have a prompt to do so. These will be hidden. This was made to address Far Cry 3’s QTE boss fights. Also, it sounds like there are no QTE’s in FC4.
-You can throw grenades through enemy car windows while you are driving, and drive away
-Flame spreading still in FC4.
-Hutchinson had lots of ideas to use poop as a weapon, like using it to coat arrows to make poison… team said no.
-You can turn off the HUD, and each element of the UI, like XP feedback, etc. Designed with the next gen consoles sharing features in mind.
-There are multiple endings, but they are less clear than far cry 3, so not press LT for good ending, RT for bad.
-You can pick sides with the different factions, and this will effect relationships with different characters, and can effect the endings.
-You can reset outposts, but the team is giving a narrative reason for it.

new things in FC4 is more like changelog for game’s patch (of course
someone put these informations together like this but my point still
stands). for example Divinity Original Sin has numerous of patches since
it launched, they all have changelogs and they changed lots of things
and they are more important and more effective than these changes over
FC3 to FC4, so best thing they (Larian Studios) can do is name each
patch and sell them separately with full price.
thank to next-gen and with power of next-gen we are able to do these:
same map size (dense – ubi dev’s liek to use this word a lot – liek)
same B-movie like story
same gameplay with elephant instead of sharks
now you can do coop (became epidemic)
you can drive and shoot at the same time
you get your fly suit sooner
oxygen for high mountains (same as anti malaria thing in FC2 with new skin)
Flame spreading still in FC4 (oh what a great new feature. at least stop it from spreading in high mountains)
even those indie/kickstarter games do/add more than these stuff in their weekly updates.
(sorry for double post john. don’t approve that one, they are the same)
I’ve watched B-movies with better characters/plot than FC 3. Hell “The Beach” have some similarities with FC 3.
Surely there will be more changes not just the stuff you mentioned and you skipped the most important bits like the factions, story segments and that the game will be mod friendly. If anything is wrong with the game it can be fixed with mods.
They’re just gonna overhaul FC3 gameplay mechanics and improve them. We’ll see how it will go.
i don’t think there will be any more feauters or changes. they showed them all. and factions were there before fc4.
something serious is wrong with this game:
1.Hutchinson: PC Is Lead Platform.
2.Hutchinson: as a NG console player youโre getting by far the best version.
3.Far Cry 4 on PS4, Xbox One Equivalent to PC Ultra High.
-You can pick sides with the different factions, and this will effect
relationships with different characters, and can effect the endings.
That is a huge change that adds to the game replayability .It wasn’t there before.I’m definitely sure that there is more changes that they don’t want to reveal this early.I hope they include those “hardcore” ones if not the game is mod friendly so it can be added in.
I don’t expect a totally new experience. It is impossible to achieve that in 2 years.
I expect few new ones like the one with factions and that every mechanic and system from FC3 is improved.Stealth, skill tree, crafting, gunplay etc.
FC3 on steroids?Yes please.
edt.Factions.It was in FC2 in some way but it didn’t make a huge impact on the game. You still got attacked by that “faction”. That was silly.I want them to greet me when i pass by them and help me when I’m in gunfight just like in 3 but that was random and you were obliged to Rakyat from the start.
You didn’t side with anyone in FC2 because your job is to kill The Jackal and you get help by buddies who you help and offer a different solution to what the factions said. It’s not your fight, you do it for your own gain and the factions know that, that’s why they want someone like you to do their jobs.
I liked FC2 though, unpredictable, you could start to suffer symptoms of Malaria at any time even during a gun fight(common in Africa), your gun could jam, your gun could fail. FC3 has too many helpers that are to rampant in other Ubisoft games.
Yeah i know, they always said when they gave you the task that “you’re on your own out there, don’t expect any help from our guys”
but he mentioned that they were included before but not in the way FC4 is going to.Like you said,it worked for FC2 but it still was a bit silly that you got attacked for no reason at all.It somewhat broke the immersion factor.I’m just a guy passing by,i don’t want any trouble and they shoot you at sight and remember that opening when you actually were just passing by.
So that’s why choosing a faction works better, gameplay and immersion vise. You’re going to be attacked bc you belong in the different faction.
That is a great add on.I hope we get some management option.Rival faction attacks your outposts so you have to make/upgrade your defences.Manage unit size on the outposts. You build up your “army” by helping people in side quests or some other ways. We’ll see ๐
I know what you mean, it’s just I wished they’d improved on FC2 rather than making FC3 so generic, it’s like they took all the great ideas from FC2 and forgot them. I think people got all starry eyed about FC3 because it’s topical again.
I think Ubisoft did FC2 in answer to Crysis because of how technically good it was and then FC3 went backwards, sure it looks good but the island lacks character and feels repetitive. It doesn’t help when they show everything on the island for you in the radar, just no sense of exploration, everything is marked, everything flashes.
Well lets just assume they’re talking BS until we see DF examine the release code, resolution and frame-rate because I don’t believe a word Ubisoft says now days.
FC4 on consoles will be locked at 30fps most likely and XB1 won’t be native 1080p.
My GTX 660 can play FC3 at 1080p, ultra, 40-55fps so meh plus the consoles will NOT be using MSAA.
and playing an FPS on a controller is preposterous xD
LOL, make me cringe at those demos using a controller in a FPS game, it’s so obvious and painful to watch.
-same map size (dense – ubi dev’s liek to use this word a lot – liek)
Don’t know how the map will completely look like yet, the density as they say? Will add layers to it.
-same B-movie like story
What defines a B-movie storyline for you?
-same gameplay with elephant instead of sharks
Yes, we could totally lure sharks onto fortress as we rode them… (why the hell couldn’t we do that ? :'( )
-now you can do coop (became epidemic)
That is a pretty huge implementation, it isn’t just a code they turn to True or something.
-you can drive and shoot at the same time
This doesn’t sound like changelog material, and is a pretty important new feature that will change how you go through missions.
-you get your fly suit sooner
This one probably does sound like changelog.
-oxygen for high mountains (same as anti malaria thing in FC2 with new skin)
Come on, seriously? You aren’t gonna lose oxygen all of a sudden during your travel somewhere. You will have to be at specific height for that. It is not a new SKIN at all, it is a feature. No seriously, enlighten me as to how this is a “new skin” of the really frustrating malaria that didn’t care where you were.
-Flame spreading still in FC4 (oh what a great new feature. at least stop it from spreading in high mountains due to lack of oxygen or less oxygen)
They are a big company, I am pretty sure they have implemented the less oxygen thing already. Also this is just to let us know. Changelog shows changes, this isn’t a “change”
-You can reset outposts, there is a reason for it, your PR guys can say it has infinite content.librate an outpost, then reset it,then librate it again,do that a million time, same as criminal activities in watch dogs.
They said… “narrative wise” it will make sense. Dude, that sounds awesome, lets see how they do.
Seriously who gave you three thumbs up. No offence but each point you mention contradicts your “changelog” statement. Stop being that generic, OH LARD THEES WILL BE TEH COPEEZ guy.
Basically he’s saying FC4 has a ton of reused features easy comparable to a patch in other games with a few exceptions.
I pretty much just explained why those features are actually new… O.o
Also, I have never really seen patches that added entire new gameplay features.
You didn’t do a particularly good job but just put positive spin on the points and asked questions yourself, meaning you don’t know.
I’m afraid that’s what you specifically think. I wasn’t taking statements and saying in relation to them how something would be fun, or positive. Instead, I took points of his previous arguments and explained about how they were new. I’m not putting a positive spin on them.
from the same argument I put forward,
Point 1 – “They said… “narrative wise” it will make sense. Dude, that sounds awesome, lets see how they do.”
^ That’s putting a positive spin, showing hopeful expectations.
point 2.1
“Yes, we could totally lure sharks onto fortress as we rode them… ”
This on the other hand is a comparative statement. In Far Cry 3 we didn’t have the elephant specific features. Amir mentioned sharks being akin to the elephants. This simply is not true, the new animals will add new opportunities.
point 2.2
The gun part.
I explained that shooting while driving feature is new. About how it will change the dynamic of the game. I didn’t say anything like, “just think of all the possibilities, we could do this and that and etc…” That would be me putting a positive spin.
Also, generally to put a positive spin, something has to originally seem negative. None of the features introduced are negative.
Again, what you stated of what “you” think. You dismissed my argument with an abysmal point.
You sound like Ubisoft game marketing, except with less knowledge then them making up ways of which gameplay might be done. Ubisoft are known for their repetition in gameplay, it’s in a lot of their titles. What next, a map you can hold while you drive? LOL
Pretty much everything I mentioned has been shown already, or it’s common sense. there’s not a single thing I’ve made up.
however, say what you want, my points still hold.
“I have never really seen patches that added entire new gameplay features.”
far cry 4 didn’t add entire new gameplay features, they add some new thing to those existing features.
but let me show you some examples:
compare Witcher 2 to W2 EE = you will see more
minecraft = tons of free patches, they added some modes, new enemies, new locations, new gameplay mechanics etc…
starbound = this game is still in beta, even in beta they add more, not just new gameplay features, items, creatures, crafting system but also they add new worlds and planets to explore with random story etc…
godus = not an amazing game, still in beta. the game changed dramatically and have bigger, newer and more game changer features (not there yet) than a AAA title like far cry 3 to far cry 4
sorry I should’ve mentioned AAA
with the exception of witcher 2, the games you’ve mentioned above are indie titles. These have a completely different freedom with its gameplay pre and post development. Also with godus, that game still doesn’t know what it wants to be, it’s changing consistently. Beta games aren’t finalised. so a lot of stuff is being rehauled or added. In fact if you were to actually play this game during development, you’d probably start with only a few animals, places and vehicles. Oh and weapons as well. Then, as the development would move along you’d start to see more polished additions and features.
The witcher 2, they pretty much worked through a lot again. I wouldn’t call it an update but instead an expansion.
Also with your reply to my questions and statements.
“yeah no”
elaborate? Basically if they were to add one mountain, the plane spread would change and it would provide not only variety but different challenges with navigation.
“B-movie”
And how would you already apply that argument to this game, whose story you haven’t gone through at all yet.
“co-op”
I’m just gonna repeat what I said. It isn’t something you can just turn on with the code. Everything has to be reimplemented or adjusted in order to allow Coop especially in the single player word. this Co op gameplay taking place in the same open world environment is a feature right? Was it available in FC3?no, so it’s a new feature.
yes you might argue that the previous did infact have Co op gameplay, but it wasn’t anything like this. this you’ll be able to play in an open world whether you go for objectives or not.
“oxygen feature ”
See how you said mountain, and not the entire map? Malaria wasn’t specific to a location. This will offer a new dynamic throughout different points of the gameplay. it’ll actually be less frustrating gameplay wise when compared with the malaria feature in fc2.
” fire spreading in a low oxygen area. ”
To be fair mate, the satellite thing was a narrative decision, not a gameplay one. This is totally different than that, this is actual gameplay that will affect how you play.
you are right, we have no idea if they do implement it. If they do, it’ll work like this. The fire will probably spread slower in low oxygen areas than the fresh ones. To be honest, would there really be something flammable on a snow capped mountain so high? ๐
“ubisoft’s involvement”
I would honestly agree with you, but I haven’t played the game to know just how much of your statement holds ground at the moment.
the reason I really took my time to write all this on a god damn phone is because I really think you need to stop judging things too harshly. From what you originally wrote, it seemed as you were beating the same dead horse everyone else is, just to seem relevant to this community here, which is, believe it or not, filled with such poisonous and hating people. These are the people who have you upvotes. They don’t see reason, but instead get an orgasm everytime someone dislikes the same thing as them.
there are definitely freaking amazing people here like you or let’s say sidspyker, who have been here for a while now but there are people who just blindly decide to hate on something, seriously overlooking the selling points.
If we keep on so heavily focusing on the negative things, we make problems that aren’t even there.
also with the gun point you mentioned, we’re not talking about innovative gameplay features previously not present in any game, but instead about far cry 4 as part of a series. For this series that is a pretty cool new feature.
lastly for your English, there’s honestly no need to apologise at all. Didn’t really see any problems. Your points were comprehensively and clearly stated. Not once did I get stuck because of a structural problem. brisk read. really no need to be apologising mate.
“I should’ve mentioned AAA”
Blizzard
“I wouldn’t call it an update but instead an expansion”
it was a free expansion then not an anniversary 60$ to 90$ game.
“And how would you already apply that argument to this game, whose story you haven’t gone through at all yet.”
i played their last games, i don’t think anything will change. but your right, lets wait and see.
“Was it available in FC3 ?”
it’s not a big feature and it was not impossible to do in FC3 if they wanted to do, but i didn’t said it’s not a feature, i said it’s epidemic.
“To be honest, would there really be something flammable on a snow capped mountain so high?”
red barrels maybe ? ๐
the main problem is ubisoft themselves, not the haters, i paid alot for their games, but what i got ? bad ports with terrible optimizations most of the times and no fix + Uplay is a pain in the azz. from AC series to watchdogs, ghost recon etc… plus false advertisements made more people angry at them, still they release some nice games, actually lots of PC exclusives, even more than consoles (just in 2014 – M&MX,new Settlers,GR online) but their big games are kinda looks the same to me.
thanks dude ๐
To be fair Blizzard does online gaming, which need stuff like updates compared to a singleplayer focused experience.
As for ubisoft, after how much I really enjoyed far cry 3, I can’t wait. I know they downgraded graphics wise, but the core gameplay was really fun, unlike watch dogs, even its gameplay was muddled.
anyways yep, gotta watch and see.
“the density as they say? Will add layers to it.”
yeah,no.
“What defines a B-movie storyline for you?”
s**t story and aweful characters with aweful acting. you have a working satellite phone, you seek for help, but you wont call for help.
“Yes, we could totally lure sharks onto fortress as we rode them… (why the hell couldn’t we do that ?”
we need flying sharks,ASAP.
“That is a pretty huge implementation, it isn’t just a code they turn to True or something.”
no,it’s just a mode.nothing new.
“This one probably does sound like changelog.”
see, i told you ๐
“Dude, that sounds awesome, lets see how they do.”
nothing is awesome when ubisoft involved
dude, we are living in a time that removing and adding a feature in the next game will count as innovation, dense etc… remember assassin’s creed series ? sure they added tons of new features in AC2 and even better in AC: B but they removed some of them in next games, now they add some of them again. all of the AC games are exactly the same the main thing that is changing is the setting, missions are all the same but not in order, follow this, librate that to sync that tower, NPCs are exactly the same, even bugs are the same from path finding to ragdoll or any related to physics bugs. same as farcry.
unlike Activision, Ubi and EA know how to cheat. they remove recruiting assassins in one game, they don’t use it in the next game but in the third game they use it and call it new, same as buying buildings, upgrading armor, ships,wh**res, landmarks etc… EA does that with battlefield series, in bad company 1 and 2 you have some destruction, but in BF3 and BF4 not so much, then hype hype you wont believe how amazing BF5 destructions are. see ? they are adding the old feature to the game with some tweak or some advancements (thanks to technology) and call it something new and innovative. why not activision ? because they are using the same thing over and over again.none of these things are new.
Librating fortresses, ok that was in the last game and for few times it was good but became boring (second island), Now you can do it infinite times, wow. factions are back ? there were factions in last game. you can shoot while driving, ok thats new but not a new feature in gaming, new to farcry and not a big one, tons of games let you do that thanks to power of next gen, GTA series,Saints Row series oh wait they are not next gen. when i’m waiting for a game that big i want too see a huge leap over the last one, like Assassin’s Creed 2 or brotherhood or even the first one, new gameplay features, new stuff to do,new gameplay mechanics, not reused stuff from last game (animations, guns, side missions, even main missions etc…) but bigger or in some case smaller in new maps or settings.
“Seriously who gave you three thumbs up.”
people that understand my point, people that tested ubicrap games before and don’t like them.
sorry for english dude
It is ubi so it will be shit, like watch dogs
PS: Althoooough far cry 3 was very well optimized and a masterpiece, guess we’ll have to wait and see
The gameplay looks quite fun honestly.
I’m playing through FC3 again and loving it. I would have loved just an expansion to FC3, but this looks to be so much more.
I’m definitely hyped for this one. Far Cry 4 and GTA5: it’s going to be an Open-World Christmas for me!
The more I hear about this, the more I get excited. Looking good so far!
In mod we trust.
As always ๐
Ubisoft? nope thnx…next on list….
We should not be caring about the videogame that will be better on consoles than PC.
Extreme downgrade in PC! Ubisoft no thx!
