The WAR Project Team has released the first version of the WAR Project Expansion Mod for The Witcher 3: Next-Gen. This is a massive cut content recreation project aimed at realising the vision for a long-forgotten questline, commonly known as the Plague Questline. So, if you are a TW3 fan, you should definitely check it out.
For those who did not know, in late 2014, CDPR made the decision to cut the Plague questline. Reasons as to why this decision was made often referred to the poor state of the questline at the time, which couldn’t be resolved in time for release. That being said, some remnants of this questline made it into the release version of The Witcher 3 in re-written/altered state.
The good news is that in 2024, CDPR released the REDKit tool for The Witcher 3. This allowed the team to datamine the game’s string database, letting them see the entire written script and allowing them to more accurately understand the events of the quests. And this led us to this fan expansion.
This first version of the mod is basically a demo containing the first few quests from the questline. The final version, scheduled to be available sometime in 2027, will rival a full expansion. According to the team, it will offer over 10 hours of gameplay.
Do note that due to how this questline fits within the world of Velen/Novigrad, which received changes and new content post-release, several quests and locations have been modified. The modding team has listed all the quest changes, which you can find below.
- An Eye for an Eye – This quest is completely re-written and the release version will no longer be available.
- A Deadly Plot – This quest no longer serves a narrative purpose, as Thaler plays a lot bigger role in the questline and is introduced a lot sooner. Due to this A Deadly Plot is removed from the game. Usable parts and dialogues of the quest will return in the WAR in a new form in the final release.
- Reason of State – This quest is completely re-written and the release version will no longer be available.
- In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow – The quest added in the next-gen update does not fit narratively into the world anymore. The Devil’s Pit (location where it takes place) will be brought back to its original glory serving as the base of operations for the main villain and his Vultures. As such this quest will be removed from the game. **After conclusion of WAR, the player will optionally be able to restore Devil’s Pit to vanilla state and bring the quest back as a menu option.
- Funeral Pyres – Due to the quest location clashing with a main WAR quest, this quest will be postponed until the relevant WAR quest is completed.
- Hearts of Stone Expansion main quest – HOS story was heavily inspired by WAR and it’s narrative to an extent clashes with the original story. Due to this HOS expansion’s main quest will be postponed until WAR is completed. **Player will manually enable HOS story when he’s ready for it using the mod menu.
- Blood and Wine Expansion – Due to the start location clashing with a main WAR quest, Blood and Wine expansion will not trigger until the relevant quest is completed. Vanilla rules will still apply, Dandelion still needs to rescued, etc…
- WAR locations – Many of the world’s locations will be re-designed and brought back to their originals. This includes various POI locations and most notably the Plague Pit and Nilfgaardian Officer resthouse near Army Group Center camp. **After WAR quests taking place in these locations are over, the player will be able to restore the world to “release version state” and still complete all the vanilla POI locations, effectively not losing any content.
As said, the final version of this fan expansion will come out sometime in 2027. Until then, you can go ahead and try its demo, which you can download from here.
Speaking of The Witcher 3 Next-Gen, you can also download some other cool mods for it. For example, there is a really cool first-person mod. The Characters Reworked Project is another interesting mod that improves the quality of over 100 characters. Let’s also not forget this mod that lets you kill most in-game NPCs. Then we have this mod that overhauls the game’s combat with better animations, better targeting, and new dodging mechanics.
In July 2024, we shared mods that restored the boat races and added 15 new quests. A modder has also restored the reputation system that CDPR cut from the game. Plus, there is a cool fan expansion, based on the original book “The Last Wish”. Then, in February 2026, a modder shared a DLC-sized expansion mod that added a new questline for Ciri and a new region to explore. Another DLC-sized fan expansion is Dawn Over Kovir.
Another must-have mod is The Witcher 3 Online. With this mod, players can join servers and play together with friends. You can customize your character with Custom Player Characters and relax in taverns using the Chill Out feature. You can also chat with other players, use emotes, and roleplay with strangers. Best of all, you can experience the full story of Geralt and Ciri from beginning to end, all while exploring the world of The Witcher with other players.
In December 2023, we shared this mod that restores content that was cut from all previous The Witcher games. Then, in February 2024, we shared a mod that attempted to remove the fake “hero” light from the game’s cut-scenes. There is also this mod that allows you to explore a part of the world from the first The Witcher game in TW3. Oh, and don’t forget this mod that allows you to ride a Griffin. Or how about this Sekiro-inspired combat mod?
We also have some mods for those playing with Ray Tracing. The RTX Mirrors Mod adds proper reflections to the game’s mirrors. Then we have this mod that improves the fire effects via Ray Tracing Global Illumination. Plus, this mod fixes the Ray Tracing bleach issues.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
