Half-Life Alyx No VR Mod looks better than ever, new gameplay video

It’s been a while since our last look at the No VR Mod for Half-Life Alyx. And last month, SoMNst released a brand new gameplay video for it, showcasing its progress. Therefore, and since it’s the weekend, I’ve decided to share this video with you.

As the title suggests, this mod attempts to make Half-Life Alyx playable on non-VR devices. It’s still a WIP project and, unfortunately, there isn’t any preview or experimental version to download yet.

According to SoMNst, this latest version of the mod is compatible with the latest version of Half-Life Alyx. Moreover, it has improved interaction system, anim interactable/physics objects can be dragged in a better way, a lot of improvements were done and most of the things were remade from the scratch, and it has a new shotgun weapon model.

Speaking of Half-Life Alyx, we also suggest taking a look at the following mods. There is a Silent Hills PT Remake Mod, as well as a Bioshock Remake Mod. Modders are also working on a Goldeneye 007 Mod. Furthermore, there is a WIP demo for a Jurassic Park Trespasser Mod. And lastly, Half-Life Alyx: LEVITATION is a DLC-sized mod that aims to offer 5 hours of gameplay.

Enjoy!

  1. Cringy, this really kills the vibe of the game. It will totally not get the appreciation it deserves. I understand some really want to play it, but just get a damn VR headset already. A Quest 2 costs the same as a Switch, even less if you go used. You won’t regret it. There are dozens of great titles to experience.

  2. Playing Half-Life: Alyx without VR would be about as fun as playing Counter-Strike without a mouse. In fact, you would have more fun watching a YouTuber play it in VR than to play it in Pancake mode.

The game is about immersion and not run-n-gunning your way through a storyline.

    1. Well, too bad for you. Because the mod will be released, people will play it, and you can sit alone with your VR crying about it.

    2. “The game is about immersion and not run-n-gunning your way through a storyline.”

So you admit the game is bad. Interesting.

          1. It’s one of the best VR games I’ve ever played. Playing it with a controller would be like play Dance Dance Revolution or Beat Saber with a keyboard. It’s retarded

          2. Those games you mentioned are r-tarded, so that already defeat the purpose of your analogy.

    3. Yes, desktop games are all about run and gun, and i’m definitely not r-tarded. s/

“would be about as fun as playing Counter-Strike without a mouse.”

There are console version of counter strike. Not as good as PC version? Maybe, but who cares?

    4. People don’t like it when you say this is a must VR game. Its a really bad non VR game. Its amazing with VR, just facts.

      1. A lot of these shady commenters who we rarely see in other articles tend to pop up in these HLA VR articles. Reminds me of Star Citizen and a certain shill.

  3. Interesting, now the game looks similar to Frictional games horror titles, with how the player handle objects. This is the feature that is supposed to be a “system seller” among VR enthusiasts…

The shooting is the most worrysome aspect, enemies are slow as hell, the headcrabs make so obvious when they are going to jump you can see it a mile away, so the game ends up trivial with no challange.

But the porting process is going along nicely, too bad the greedy f*cks at valve didn’t do their own PC or even console port.

    1. “It’s default slow, you cannot fix it no matter what”

I think it is possible, but maybe too much for a modder to fix it by himself.

  4. Cringy, this really kills the vibe of the game. It will totally not get the appreciation it deserves. I understand some really want to play it, but just get a damn VR headset already. 1. ” It will totally not get the appreciation it deserves.”

More people playing it will reduce the appreciation it deserves? only if the game is bad.

      1. Asking people to buy VR is one thing, but it would objectively kill the vibe of the game. Non-VR simply breaks the design of Alyx.

        1. “it would objectively kill the vibe of the game. Non-VR simply breaks the design of Alyx.”

First you need to ask if the person you are talking too gives a single damn about this game “vibe”.

Second, i have yet to see a non vr enthusiast demanding the same experience as in vr, but shills can’t help but bring the subject everytime some poor modder makes some progress with a non vr version.

Man, people talk about Sony fanboy tears, but i would love to see the reaction of valve shills if they decided to port this game to PC, would be tears of rage or cognitive dissonance?

    2. I have a vr headset, and some vr games I love (onward v1. 7, dirt rally, assetto corsa, ams2 etc and a few other great games, but they are the type you don’t play for long).
Buy I don’t enjoy hl alyx. It’s got terrible vr mechanics, sh*t guns (no two handed weapons) annoying puzzles, places to get lost in, slow movement speed etc etc. I get bored and frustrated trying to play it, standing around irl. Just standing there… Unlike onward which has you ducking and weaving etc.
So yeah, personally I might just finish the game in pancake for the story..

      1. I agree. As someone that bought a CV1 with Touch all the way back in 2016 and who has been an avid VR gamer since I thought HL Alyx was HIGHLY over rated and, like you said, featured very poor mechanics.

Game didn’t even have melee…yet people calling it the best VR game ever…give me a break. It was a 6 out of 10 for me, max.

    1. In this time and age i think it’s a very bad idea to bring this masterpiece to life. I don’t wanna see Gordon becomes a marshmallow, and let’s be honest the people behind the real Half-Life is no more. If we got a new game it’s going to be made by the same sjw makers of this lame joke called Alyx… If it’s happen expect to see something that has nothing to do with the original game.

  5. Man, lots of rudeness in here from both sides.
I agree that this is a made-for-VR game and playing a non-VR hacked version defeats the purpose. Play that way if you really want, but the game will be a hollow shell of its former self.
I really want to play HL Alyx but I’m waiting until there’s a VR headset that works a bit differently than the current ones.
    1. I don’t like full immersion. I’d rather the headset visor be translucent lenses than a screen, so I can always see at least a faint image of the real world. I’ve seen big spiders run through my room before! That’s a good time to pause the game.
    2. I want to control motion (walking in VR) by leaning my torso, kind of like a Segway. Probably need a sensor belt and/or vest, along with an engage button on the remote so you can still lean around corners without moving.

    1. At the end of the day, Alyx is still a fairly standard fps game, if the game translate that badly to 2d (not what i am seeing, i think the game have potential as non VR), then it’s just an admission that they relied on a gimmick to sell the game. A good game will be good regardless of hardware (not counting hardware downgrades, “demakes, etc, but even those can turn out good).

      1. One day when VR is available and affordable in your 3rd world country you will realize how wrong you were. 😉

        1. Do you have something positive to say about VR? Other than being expensive that is, you can’t sell nerd gadgets based on status, we are not talking about lamborghinis here.

          1. While I agree that hl alyx isn’t that fun in vr, I do love other games in vr. And vr is not that expensive, your phone probably cost more. I still have a cheap Lenovo explorer wmr headset. I have had it for years and it’s been great, I am looking to upgrade soon though.

  6. Congratulations. You turned the best VR game of all time into a total sub par FPS. Mouth breathers

    1. Sounds more like an admission of the game being crap than the other way around. You make it sound like the modder is porting HL alix to an SNES when in actually there isn’t really much of a difference other than some motion controls.

      1. It’s not “motion controls” you’ve obviously never played VR. If i reach down and pick something up on VR, it feels real. It’s not motion controls. People who’ve never played VR will never understand. It’s the difference of playing an EA sports game vs actually playing the sport.

        1. So you feel the physical object you pick up on the VR game just like in real life? Do you smell the object too? And most importantly, why would i want to “reach down” in the first place? I can do that in real life, you should try it.

“It’s the difference of playing an EA sports game vs actually playing the sport.”

Doesn’t necessarily mean that the actual sport is more fun than it’s game counterpart. It’s the difference of being a clumsy player or controlling a professional through the controller.
