Rocket League has been review bombed after announcement of Epic Store exclusivity

Another game has been tested by Steam’s new review moderation algorithm as the store page of  Rocket League succumbs to an inordinate amount of negative reviews. This follows after an article from Variety in which a public relations statement from Epic Store announced that Rocket League will become another exclusive to their client.

As we wrote recently, Psyonix, the studio behind this immensely popular vehicular soccer game, was acquired by Epic Games about three days ago. We also mentioned that Epic plans to become the exclusive online platform for Rocket League some time towards the end of this year, however Steam support and upcoming DLC will not end with the migration.

Still, the news has not been received kindly by gamers, and the game’s Steam page exhibits their sentiments in the review section. The rating stands at ‘Very Positive’ within opening the page, however the asterisk next to the rating indicates that ‘Off-topic review activity’ filtration is in effect. This is Steam’s method of attempting to prevent a game’s overall rating being altered by review bombing. However, users still have the option to have such activity included on their own Steam clients if they so choose.

Psyonix has answered several additional questions on what this means for the future of their game on their website.

  4. Good they deserved it for selling out to Epic. It like they are not satisfy with the amount of copies sold so they decided to get extra money from Epic. Shame on them and hope they go bankrupt.

            If you buy something then its yours all the retro games are still working cuz you just pop it into the machine and boom game is running …..

            its like when you buy a car and the company who you get it from give you lots of good stuf for your car Because they are cool decide to sell them to som random guy who then tell you

  7. Having played this for over 1650hours, i really don’t see the point in selling to Epic. Besides toppers, wheels, colors and whatnot, there’s nothing new coming to this game.

  14. EGS aside, I really don’t see what the big deal with “review bombing” is in the first place. Customers are discontent with the product, and they overwhelmingly start changing (or placing) reviews to negative. Isn’t this what reviews are supposed to be for? Is it just that these people don’t like the reason they are leaving negative reviews? How else should users express their discontent with the game?

    Why aren’t people able to sift through user reviews, and pick out the ones they find to be worth reading, and genuine? Steam even lets you sort and filter reviews, by your preference. Why is everyone so up in arms about a system, that is working as intended? Is it because they don’t like the negative connotation it puts on the game, as a reflection of how users feel about it?

    “OMG They are ‘review bombing’ us!!” – So you mean they are reviewing your game, gotcha.

    Proptip- If you don’t want to be “review bombed”, don’t do s**t that pisses off your user base. You know, logic and all that jazz.

    When was the last game that just randomly and spontaneously got “review bombed”, for no reason? Right, I thought so.

  15. Remember, even EA kept their legacy games on Steam after they started putting newer ones on Origin. They have even added a bunch of their games to GOG in recent years.
