AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition performs somewhere between the GTX1070 & the GTX1080 in a variety of games

PCPer got its hands on an AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition and ran some gaming benchmarks on it, and the results were a bit underwhelming. Now as we’ve already said, this graphics card is for workstations and even though AMD has included a gaming mode in its latest drivers for this graphics card, it is slower than the gaming variant that will be coming out in late July.

In Unigine Superposition, AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition was able to score 5476 in the “4K Optimized” scenario whereas the default GTX1080 was able to score 7394 in that very same benchmark.

In DiRT Rally (1440p at Ultra quality settings) the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition was able to push around 85-100fps, performing somewhere between NVIDIA’s GTX1080 (90-110fps) and GTX1070 (80-90fps).

Surprisingly enough, the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition was able to almost come close to Titan XP’s performance in Fallout 4 at 1440p, though it was way slower in 4K. PCPer claimed that it needs to re-test the game on the Titan XP as the results at 1440p looked weird to say the least.

In Grand Theft Auto V, the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition was significantly slower than even the NVIDIA GTX1070.

In HITMAN, the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition was somewhere between the NVIDIA GTX1080 and the NVIDIA GTX1070, whereas in both Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3, the  AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition was a bit faster than the NVIDIA GTX1070.

Overall, and these results are a bit disappointing. Our guess was that the consumer version of Vega would be somewhere between the GTX1080Ti and the GTX1080, however we are not certain whether this will be the case after all. Yes, the drivers are not mature yet and the consumer version of Vega is said to perform better than the Frontier Edition. However, and from the looks of it, the consumer version of Vega may be slightly faster than the GTX1080!
