Zelda: Ocarina of Time Unreal Engine 5.7 Fan Remake Released

YouTube’s ‘CryZENx’ has just released a new demo for his amazing Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake project in Unreal Engine 5. This demo will let you experience the Lake Hylia and Zora Fountain areas. Moreover, it’s using the latest version of UE5, Unreal Engine 5.7.

This free demo version is locked at 30FPS. Moreover, it only lets you play the Lake Hylia and Zora Fountain areas. CryZENx has a 60FPS version of his mod, however, that version is behind a paywall. My guess is that the paid version will also have all of the other chapters that the modder has recreated.

CryZENx has added a lot of new improvements to this demo. First, he created a custom water shader with interactive caustics — those cool, moving light patterns you see on the bottom of lakes. The water has been completely redone and now reacts naturally to the environment.

The 3D model for Link has also been improved. He now uses new shaders that make him fit better with the realistic world, giving him a next-gen look while keeping his classic charm. There’s even a dynamic hair shader, so his hair moves more realistically and reacts to light, making him look more alive.

The Great Fairy model has also been updated with a stunning new design that matches the high-quality environment, giving her a magical and impressive look at her fountain.

Lastly, the input system has been fully fixed, so controls now feel smoother and more responsive. Overall, this new demo should be much more stable than the previous versions.

Since the demo uses UE5.7, it should run better than the previous demos. Unreal Engine 5.7 has brought numerous improvements to Lumen and Ray Tracing. It also packed a number of CPU optimizations. So, in a way, you can get a taste of what this new version of UE5 can offer. However, it’s not 100% representative of what UE5.7 is capable of. So, make sure to keep that in mind.

You can go ahead and download the demo from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find a video for it. So, if you don’t feel like downloading it, you can at least watch it.

Speaking of Unreal Engine 5, I recommend trying out these other free fan-made demos. You can grab a Superman UE5 Demo, a Halo 3: ODST Remake, and a Spider-Man UE5 Demo. There’s also a fan-made version of STALKER in Unreal Engine 5. If you love old-school FPS games, you should check out this remake of the classic FPS Blood in Epic’s engine. For Mario fans, we have this cool Super Mario Galaxy Tech Demo in Unreal Engine 5.

And that’s not all. There is a cool remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s Halo level in UE5 that you can download. Or how about this free Attack on Titan game? Then we have the fan remakes for Dino Crisis 2 and MediEvil 2. Plus, there is an amazing fan remake of Sonic Adventure 2, called Sonic Adventure 2 Redux. Oh, and let’s not forget the amazing ports of Skyrim and Oblivion.

Owners of high-end GPUs can also try these two tech demos. The first one features a Witcher-like environment. The second shows off a Rome Italian Town. Last month, we also shared a demo of King’s Field 2 in UE5. Finally, we have The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Reimagined in Unreal Engine 5, a remake of Flappy Bird, a demo for Need for Speed: Underground 2, and a Diablo 2 Remake Demo. They all look awesome, so be sure to give them a try.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. It's pretty impressive for a single person project.

However, I really do wonder how he manages to profit off Nintendo's IP of all corporations for so long without getting sued.

From what I could gather, the guy seems to be German, so maybe there's some law in Germany that allows to profit from derivative work without the explicit acknowledgement of the original rights holder?

    1. FYI, the guy is actually Italian, he has written that on his profile since forever and it's still the same as of now.

      1. Thanks for the heads-up, must have mixed him up with someone else!

And the fact he's Italian kinda explains why Nintendo can't seem to touch him, OG Mafia et al. 😉

        1. Yeah, Italian Mafia, no wonder why 90% of Jewtendo's members are actually mobsters (who would literally put a bullet in your head for doing something as simple and harmless as downloading a video game in your home for free) and only 10% of them are scam artists and to paint themselves supposedly as "innocent and family-friendly company!", because their mascot is ironically an Italian plumber after all 😉

  2. There’s also a fan-made version of STALKER in Unreal Engine 5.

John, do you even fact check yourself before constantly claiming the same lie over and over again? That one has been removed long ago, and you constantly kept linking to it in fan remakes articles despite being already removed.

Unless someone has a back up of that STALKER UE5, then that's a different thing. If someone probably still has it or knows a place where I can still find it, please inform me (I already tried the Wayback Machine on that link, it did not help).

      1. Yeah, thing thing is there has been so many "STALKER Unreal Engine" projects that it has become so confusing and hard to tell the difference between one and the other

  3. He's going to end up in prison with the Patreon stuff, or at best, sued into oblivion. Modding is and has always been free for a reason. Patreon gives a bad name to the loving practice many have done for years.

    1. Paywalled content is very illegal. You are Paying for Zelda. Im fine supporting the Patreon to support a modder. But the Mod Contents should always Be free to the public.

  4. You missed the word 'Demo' in your article title. Besides Nintendo based remakes are problematic enough without trying to charge for them, this will never make a full release.

    1. He missed it intentionally, I wouldn't have clicked otherwise even though I knew that it had to be a demo regardless.

  5. Imagine PAYING to unlock a piece of creatively bankrup sh*t UE5 demo of a 25 yr old game that looks worse than the original for incongruent the art style is with the generic UE™ visuals, from 30 fps to 60 lmaoooo.

This has to be up there as one of the worst ways to spend money you can imagine.

    1. Dear god. So true. I cannot believe the balls to do this to a Nintendo property! Idk if he gets sued. He might get grabbed in the night by the Nintendo special rapid deployment enforcement squad

      1. Haha, yeah, probably. And it’s not just any IP, it’s Zelda, it’s their bread and butter. Tthey are going to hunt him down for sure 😅

  6. I played his original demo years ago, Unreal Engine 4 I believe, which only included Kokiri Forest and the Deku Tree, and even those areas weren't complete at all. Problem was it was just a tech demo, you couldn't actually do anything other than walk around and look at the environment. This had to have been 2017 or so. I should just give up hope. We're never going to get an OoT remaster (the 3DS version does NOT count) or remake. At least not in a timeframe that matters. The fact this demo is UE5 now, and only on Lake Hylia and Zora's Fountain, after like 8 years, is bizarre but makes a lot more sense given his paywall. He never intended on releasing a full working game. He's probably a Zelda supernerd who thought it would be cool to create a lookalike

  8. How hard is it for people to learn that you don't tell anyone a thing about your Nintendo project until you have a full release out!?

  9. Remind me when this is an actual finished playable game i can play. I own 3 copies of the Original. I like to play it on Unreal. Dont care unless its a game.

  10. It's one thing to try and sell a mod for a game that runs natively on that platform that requires the purchaser to own the original copy of the game.. Like if I wanted to be a cheap yuden and start charging for access to the RTX mods I'm working on (just got Kingpin: Life of Crime and Soldier a Fortune working btw and remastering those is now underway..man I wish my YouTube channel didn't get banned so I could post clips)

  11. Nintendo should hire this guy and pay him a million bucks plus percentage points to complete the remake.
