Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection brings, for the first time, Mortal Kombat 4 Arcade to PCs and consoles

Digital Eclipse has just announced Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will feature the first four main MK games, as well as some special handheld versions of them. So, let’s take a look at it.

Before continuing, here are all the games that will be featured in the collection.

  • Mortal Kombat – 1992: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear
  • Mortal Kombat II -1993: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X
  • Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES, Genesis Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES
  • Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997: Arcade
  • Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001: Game Boy Advance
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002: Game Boy Advance
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003: Game Boy Advance

What’s interesting here is that Digital Eclipse has listed the Arcade version of the first four MK games. As such, we can assume that the collection will have the Arcade version of Mortal Kombat 4.

This is huge news for a lot of MK fans. You see, Mortal Kombat 4 did find its way to the PC back in the old days. However, that version looked awful and inferior to the Arcade version. The only version of MK4 that was almost on par with the Arcade was Mortal Kombat 4 Gold for SEGA Dreamcast.

The downside here is that the Arcade version does not have the FMV endings. Instead, it uses in-engine cut-scenes that look inferior to the FMVs. Still, I don’t really mind that. For years we’ve been asking for a MK4 Remaster. And now, we might finally get a port of the Arcade game.

For those wondering, no. MAME cannot perfectly emulate this game yet. Mortal Kombat 4 has major visual issues with MAME, even to this date. So, this will be the first time we’ll get an Arcade-perfect version. Or at least that’s what Digital Eclipse implies.

It’s also funny that the collection will have the Game Gear/Game Boy versions of MK1 and MK2, but not for MK3. Mortal Kombat 3 on both Game Gear and Game Boy was kind of bad. Still, they are special versions that, at least in my opinion, should be included in it.

Finally, the team hinted at something more. We all know that MK gamers have been asking for proper remasters of these classic 2D MK games. So, is the team hinting at something like that?

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will be released sometime in 2025.

Enjoy the trailer and stay tuned for more!
