GTA 5 & Civilization 6 free EGS giveaways brought a 245% & 477% jump to PC player numbers

SuperData has shared its monthly report, revealing some interesting new data about Grand Theft Auto 5 and Civilization 6. According to the team, the free Epic Games Store giveaways brought a significant boost to their PC player numbers.

Going into more details, GTA 5 saw a 245% increase in its PC player numbers. Furthermore, PC revenue more than doubled as players purchased in-game content. And this right here is the main reason publishers are giving away their games for free on Epic Games Store.

Epic Games has also given for free Sid Meier’s Civilization VI on the Epic Games Store and PC player numbers surged 477%. PC revenue grew by 52% thanks to the promotion and the release of new in-game content, including a season pass.

Additionally, May’s biggest new release, Minecraft Dungeons, attracted 1.8 million players. Still, the Microsoft title, did not earn enough to make it to the top 10 PC games of the month and was only number nine on console.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive earnings and player numbers fell from an April all-time-high as competing title Valorant prepared to launch. After months of upward momentum, CS:GO revenue shrank by 9% and user numbers fell 6%. During this time, Valorant, the rival tactical shooter from League of Legends maker Riot Games, was in beta and potentially siphoned away CS:GO players.

Lastly, here are the top selling games for PC and consoles in May 2020.

      1. Articles say “PC revenue more than doubled as players purchased in-game content”: this means that they make money through in-game purchases – just like mobile games…

    1. Ye thats what i wonder too.
I imagine someone got tricked into staying there and actually spending money for other games as well. Even if 80% of the people dont use the store, theres still the other 20.. and eventually that 80% might also reconsider slowly with time.

Oh well, Steam for life for me. I’m too tired of having 50 different launcher. I got more than 2000 games in my backlog, i can wait for the games to come to Steam eventually.

Still, competition could be a good thing. Who knows what Valve might do?

      1. 2000 unplayed/unfinished games ? wow you might have to see a someone about that. Dam i just got under 20 and then i bought 7 new games on summer sale so its around 24 now if i remeber it correctly.

        1. Ye i got a ton of games, cuz i keep everything from 1995 till now. All the good games that is, or the ones that everyone considers classics. As i said to the other guy, its less than 2000, i was just spewing numbers ( should be around 800, my gaming laptop has around 400 and i got around that much on my desktop, but that also includes emulators)

But ye, they are unfinished. I did play all of them or start them at some point but i wanna go back to them and finally finishing them

      2. 2000 games but 80% of those are probably garbage LOL. My steam account is 16 years old… know how many games I have… just a hair over 200. Quality>Quanity

        1. Well i was exaggerating, more like 700-800 (on steam) and no, 60-70% of them are really good and worth playing. I just got no time for them. I do have a lot of trashy games as well tho.

Thats kind of normal on Steam LOL.

P.s. The other games are not on steam, but i still got to play them and finish them cuz they are pretty good. PC gaming classics and all

    2. exactly, or even stays in the platform, i know a lot of people who comes grab the freebie and leave, others plays the game for a while and then leaves. Steam have hundreds of accounts and only a third of that amount plays something or buys something in the platform.

      1. Not exactly, not even close. The article details how their revenue jumped significantly. Even provides numbers.

    3. If you’d read the article, it clearly state significant gains in actual revenue generated by expansion passes and other in game purchases. They’re spending money. Like it or not, their tactics are working while Steam is still sitting idle.

      1. No 90% its from fortnite lol, they literally give free everything you dont need to spend any money lol, its clearly a PR move just straight up lying to make it look like the store is actually success but its not, bleeding money left and right.

      1. A couple thousand doesn’t even make up the Fortnite crowd alone. Literally millions of paying customers there.

  1. Ironically I’ve claimed every free game from EGS (except Gone Home because I’m don’t want that trash even for free) and haven’t even installed a single one.

    1. Same. Got tons of game, can’t bother to install them. Too much other stuff to play on Steam and GoG.com

  2. So much basement teenagers with no jobs…. Sad…

BTW never I will return to the cancerous GTA Online cheaters festival……

  3. I installed batman arkham knight on epic (free), but that store is so sh**ty (not even cloud saves) that I bought it on steam lol

  4. EGS did not singlehandedly, magically increase ALL PC gaming revenue in the span of 4 weeks by giving away free games. It does not work that way.

The DSOG title is completely misleading. The amount of people on PC playing GTA5 increased 245%, because people got the game for free. No one was playing GTA5 because it’s 7 years old and has no content worth playing and is completely infested with cheaters. It’s not an accomplishment or a relevant statistic.

PC players of Civ 6 grew 477%. Because no one is playing it because it’s a bad game that sucks deeply in comparison to Civ 5.

In other news: “People who get free games will play free games.”

    1. Please, provide me some proof that all these companies are lying about their revenue. Also, please explain how they’re getting by with it with their investors (it’s highly illegal).
That’s not what the article aid anyway. It was revenue for those games in particular.

  5. Take the freebies, pirate the exlusives and use GOG / Steam for everything else.

    Epic, make piracy great again.
