Playstation 4 emulator for the PC, GPCS4, boots and runs a commercial game for the first time

Alongside Orbital, GPCS4 is another Playstation 4 emulator that is currently under development for the PC. And while both of them are at a really early stage, GPCS4 can finally boot a commercial game. However, and before getting too excited, this emulator is far from being able to run any game at acceptable framerates.

According to its creator, GPCS4 can finally render a 2D image demo. Moreover, GPCS4 can boot the twin-stick shooter for Playstation 4, We Are Doomed. Not only that, but the emulator can… wait for it… actually run the game.

Now while We Are Doomed is not a demanding game, it’s incredible that GPCS4 can even run it. However, do note that We Are Doomed is not playable. While the emulator can go in-game, it’s not capable of fully running this game.

It’s also worth noting that GPCS4 can also boot the Playstation 4 version of NieR. However, I want to make it crystal clear that you won’t be able to enjoy PS4 games on the PC anytime soon. I mean, take a look at the PS3 emulator, RPCS3, and how long it took it to run some of its triple-A exclusives.

Last but not least, you can go ahead and download this PS4 emulator from GitHub. Developers can also assist on its development via its Discord channel.

  1. interesting progress. don’t know what the future progress will hold for the emulator.
it may be shorter than the ps3 emulator. likely it will be still some years away and will also likely require a beefy 2025 configuration. it being said, i may be more interested in those rumors of more PS4 to PC ports in the future.

  2. “you won’t be able to enjoy PS4 games on the PC anytime soon”
The naysayers also said that about Nintendo Switch not so long ago.

“look at the PS3 emulator, RPCS3, and how long it took”
I suspect that it’ll be quicker to emulate PS4 to a decent standard than it took to emulate PS3 with its unusual and quirky architecture.

      1. Uncharted 4 is supposed to be the end of the series you pathetic incel.

Did you notice the “A Thief’s End” subtitle?

Or the multiple interviews saying it was the end?

    1. Yeah, there’s not much at all that’s exclusive to PS4 that’s of any interest to me.

I was about to say Resogun but that game is also on PS3 and PS Vita where I already own it but playing the 60fps PS4 version would be cool.

Maybe also Uncharted 4 but that franchise peaked with Uncharted 2 and it’s very long long in the tooth so it doesn’t interest me that much. The Last Of Us 2 might be worth a play but with Naughty Dog seemingly intent on infusing its games with soy it also doesn’t interest me very much. The 60fps remaster of the original The Last Of Us might be worth a play but, again, I already played the PS3 version to death many years ago.

Bloodborne maybe but only if emulation cleans up that game’s godawful shimmering due to the woeful anti-aliasing. It’s 30fps (at best!) anyway so that’s another huge downer but maybe it could be modded to 60fps like Demon’s Souls on RPCS3 has been.

So, yeah, I honestly can’t think of anything genuinely exclusive to PS4 that I’d be excited to play even when it’s free.

    2. RPCS3 started development in 2011 and played its first commercial game in 2014. The Cell also has a ton of documentation on it that helped the project along. PS4 being x86 doesn’t mean faster or easier emulation though. The Xbox doesn’t have a decent emulator, at least to the same level as PCSX2 and even RPCS3 because even though the Xbox is basically like a PC, there’s not much documentation on the hardware and it uses a numerous proprietary parts that require a significant amount of time and understanding to reverse engineer

    3. Yeah, there’s not much at all that’s exclusive to PS4 that’s of any interest to me.

      1. only interested in GoW, GoT, HZD, BB, Uncharted 4, Spiderman. well, just wanna play it on pc. hopefully someday..

      2. Dude
You listed Last of Us twice
        Driveclub servers are dead
Ratchet and Clank remake sucks compared to original
Ghost of Tsushima seems to be KIA
        Knack 1 and 2? Really??
Order 1885? Typing this comment took longer
Yakuza 6 is on PC via Microsoft Store
Why not just say Uncharted series? And the DLC counts separate?
        And you listed 8 remasters.

There is trying to make a big list to look impressive and then there is just not giving a sh*t. I do like many of those games (would love Bloodborne on PC) but that just seems desperate to have a bigger list.

        1. I just listed all exclusives available on PS4, for someone that doesn’t have a PS4 or never had some of those games on previous Playstation. Chill.

      3. Literally not one of those games is a “must play”

Yakuza 6 and 7 will both be on PC in due time, as will Judgement probably.

Order is pure trash and everyone knows that.

DriveClub and GT Sport are inferior to several other games on the market not the least of which is Forza.

KZF is so bad it killed the franchise

Uncharted 4 isn’t even worth playing. The novelty of the added mechanics – grappling hook and rope swinging, winch, and driving a vehicle – fade fast and aren’t worth the time wasted to play the same generic game a 4th, maybe even a 5th or 9th time depending on if you played remaster or Golden Abyss or Lost Legacy.

TLOU2 isn’t out and doesn’t matter until we can confirm if it’s trash. Same applies to Ghost of Tsushima.

God of War 3 remaster isn’t even noticeably higher fidelity than the original.

God of War 2018 is probably the only first party exclusive on PS4 worth actually playing I’ll give you that one. But it’s not a “must” play. It does nothing that other games haven’t before except put Christopher Judge in the main character seat.

HZD – another generic, open world Far Cry trash game. No.

        Last Guardian – huge disappointment.

Persona 5 is a Sega game and will come to PC.

Everything else is a remaster. This is literally the second SoTC redo. You must be joking. TLOU remaster came out barely a year after the game itself.

        So again, no.

  3. The reason why RPCS3 took so long to get to this point was largely due to the PS3 using a custom-built CPU architecture which took forever to translate to be run on a commercial CPU. The PS4 on the other hand uses a relatively simple AMD CPU, so i’d say the prospects look favorable for quicker PS4 emulation.

    1. Yeah, but emulating the ps4 hardware is still going to take so much resources not to mention the ps4 has the power of a decent PC. Translating the calls to a graphics api is MUCH better even if it is more difficult because it is faster.

  4. One would think emulating a PS4 wouldn’t be too bad, considering most of the processes are standard x86 stuff.
Then again, I can’t program an emulator so I’m no expert here.

    1. emulation is basically using your cpu raw power to run the entire process of a consoles hardware on top of your system simulating the hardware, the os the api, everything. Its not a port, its not how devikits work, its basically Tron on your system.

      1. Yeah I get the basics. It just seems like with some clever coding a lot of the overhead can just be passed through. Virtual systems, also on x86, run pretty well and do something pretty similar, minus simulating the API and graphical hardware.

          1. Obviously not, but it’s the only viable alternative that doesn’t need 10 years for the hardware to catch up. Translating the calls is a mess but you can still make a decent emulator. I think one example of this is Yuzu emulator for the Nintendo Switch, but I’m not sure.

      1. I agree, I bought one for the exclusives and not one of the games other then ratchet and clank kept me entertained for more then a day.. now the ps4 has just been gathering dust for over a year

    1. So did I and those exclusives aren’t even good enough to have finished more than 1 of them.

I don’t even use mine except when it turns itself on at random. PS4 does that weird crap where it links with your TV and occasionally decides to turn on, like, 1 out of 35 times you turn on the TV.

  5. I hope will scalate quickly, i think we are just months from playing on the emulator. X86 guys full amd hardware.

  6. Well with good luck within next 5 to then we can emulate ps4 in a normal pc, normal being a medium specs pcs

    1. IKR. i was at my father house yesterday and saw him playing RE5 on his ps3 and while he was just shooting with the MP5 the game dropped to the lows 20.

It seems that people who complain about an emulator inconsistency in terms frames fail to recall that the original system usually is also plagued with problems. Specially the PS3 that outside of PS3 exclusives any multiplat run considerable worse than x360.

  7. There are lots of playable PS3 games already. The Godfather Don’s Edition, Demon’s Souls, Persona 5, Army of Two, Asura’s Wrath, and more. There are no gamepad problems. The DS4 works natively and supports motion controls for games that need it. DS3 needs the PSNow drivers to work properly but it doesn’t take a master’s degree in computer science to figure out how to set it up.

  8. I believe going forward it gonna get much easier to emulate consoles as the upcoming/current ones use chips similar to desktop CPUs/GPUs, with alteration to the transistors, IPC, core clock, cache, voltage, etc to tailor the console requirements.
