In a recent AMA with NoGutsNoGalaxy, Piranha Games’ president revealed some new details about MechWarrior 5’s Epic Store deal. Bullocks claimed that the consequences of the team’s decision to release Mechwarrior 5 exclusively on the Epic Games Store weren’t that huge.
As Bullock claimed, only 700 out of 20,000 people asked for a refund on the first day after Piranha Games announced that the game would be releasing exclusively on the Epic Games Store. This basically means that only 3.5% of the pre-orders were refunded. Obviously, we don’t know whether that number has been increased over the next couple of days.
Furthermore, Bullock stated Pirahna Games pays for the refunds of Mechwarrior 5, without Epic Games helping them. This came as a surprise as a lot of people thought that Epic Games would be handling the refunds. After all, that’s what happened with Shenmue 3.
From the looks of it, the negative impact of Piranha Games’ decision wasn’t that big. This is definitely good news for the developers as they can focus on making a great game, without having to worry about the refunds.
Bullock re-stated that while Piranha Games is aware the hatred towards the Epic Games Store. Still, he believes that this exclusivity will benefit the game in the long run.

Sourcebooks. Scenario books. Rulebooks. Expansions. Map sheets. Terrain. Paint. Kickstarters. Ebooks.

It’s a combination of multiple anti-consumer and overall poor decisions on the publisher, creator, and developers behalf.
Pirahna Games is garbage. MWO was early access garbage for years while PG utterly failed to understand the problems they were getting well-worded explanations for on the forums. That’s just gameplay mechanics and technical issues, not even addressing the P2W , microtransaction, total BS element of the game.
Jordan and anyone who has ever touched the IP have never been shy about profiteering off of fans, but PG took it to a whole new level. It was one thing when Iron Winds miniatures for the TTG cost $7 – $15 a piece in the 90s, but for it to cost $60+ to buy one digital mech, that was beyond unacceptable – beyond even Games Workshop ridiculous.
This franchise only exists in 2019 off of the good will of its audience. Mechwarrior Online would not exist if it wasnt’ kickstarted by people like me. Nor would Battletech. The current TTG only exists because of them for example the Clan invasion tech 2 expansion that got kickstarted in 7 minutes last month. You’re talking about one of the three most hardcore groups of gaming fans in history right now – Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer, and Battletech.
When it’s a known fact that the majority of PC gamers use and prefer Steam, after the massive increase in MWO players when they finally added the game to Steam, it’s pure disrespect to make MW5 – the game EVERY fan has been waiting for for almost 2 decades – an pic exclusive.
Moving on – the fact that you’re too stupid and basic and worthless of a person to have any principles doesn’t mean that everyone else is like you. Some people stand by theirs. Especially the old farts playing this game since 84.

Just learn to live with the fact that some people don’t care about the launcher exclusivity. The principle in this case is not something many care about. The application of principle has limits, and different people draw the line in different places. Not caring about this principle doesn’t mean you don’t care about any principle (or the same principle but to a different extent)
For me, buying launcher exclusivity falls under “big oof”. I like Steam a lot, and Valve, actually. At the end of the day though, I really don’t care. If a bunch of devs get guaranteed money, good for them. I do not care.
I can understand people who kickstarted games getting pissed and whatnot but again I do not care. And at the end of they day it’s launcher exclusivity, a small price to pay for guaranteed revenue (which is waaaaaay more important for most of these devs).

I use GoG, microsoft, and many other independent launchers, but to pretend that epic has some wonderous altruistic intent to bring more money to developers is a laugh. I’m done with the entire franchise. I’ve loved it more than any other gaming product in history, for 25 years, but I’m done. Jordan has made too many poor decisions with his creation and having anything to do with Pirahna games is one of them. Total waste of money, kickstarting MWO. At least right now you have the option to kickstart new expansions to the revived CGL version of classic battletech, so you don’t have to settle for these crap PC games that Pirahna can’t get right.
I get my battletech love right now by hunting down the mass market ROC published novels and sourcebooks and TROs, and from the paradox game. I wanted to believe in MW5 after 15 years or however long since MW4 Mercs, but I’m done. I’m happy to buy things secondhand on ebay or thriftbooks or amazon or HPB right now.
