Cyberpunk 2077 aims to put a lot of emphasis on destructible environments

According to senior gameplay designer Pawel Kapala, Cyberpunk 2077 will put a lot of emphasis on destructible environments. As Kapala noted, the game will have numerous destructible objects, destructible covers and destructible glass.

As Kapala told VG247:

“We put a lot of emphasis on having destructible environments overall in our game. Players will experience things ranging from very simple, so for example, if you have a shootout in a bar, and you’re shooting the environment, you will see glasses exploding, or things like beer bottles disintegrating on bullet impact. We wanted to have that feeling that, basically, after you’re done with a shootout, the place where you had the shootout is destroyed.”

Kapala then added that the game’s destruction system ranges up to very big portions of the level.

“We have stuff like destructible cover. So, we want the players to actually use some weapons to destroy the cover, so that the enemies are at a disadvantage. We have destructible glass. All of those things give you the feeling that the projectiles from your weapons actually carry power with them. And this also extends to stuff like, you will see bullet decals on most of the things, all of the things in the level. You will see different hit reactions. Like for example, if you hit a pipe with water in it, you will see the water sprouting from the place that you hit it. And this extends to nearly every object that we have in the game.”

That’s definitely great news for all Cyberpunk 2077 fans. After all, one of the criticisms of most current-gen games is the lack of environmental interactivity. From the looks of it, Cyberpunk 2077 won’t have a “lifeless” or “static” environments.

Alongside the destructible environments, the game will be using real-time ray tracing and DLSS 2.0. CD Projekt RED will be using Ray Tracing for Diffuse Illumination, Ambient Occlusion, Reflections and Shadows. Moreover, you can find some RTX screenshots here and here. It’s worth noting that the game’s preview build ran with 60fps at 1080p/DLSS with Ray Tracing. As such, it will be interesting to see the performance of this game on the Ampere GPUs.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on November 19th. The game will be DX12-only, meaning that it will only work on Windows 7 and Windows 10.

    1. Shush blasphemer! At least you get glass that breaks and covers that break too! And dont forget the leaking pipes!

    2. On CP2077 reddit you’d be downvoted to oblivion for questions like that. Their subreddit should be renamed from “r/cyberpunkgame” to “r/circlejerkgame”.

  1. This is on the level of “you can jump in The Last Of Us 2″…really? destructible enviroments and cover in a shooter? wow…we truly reach the future here.

    1. Don’t forget that you could break glass in it , too. However, for some reason, you could not jump over small fences, though.

    2. Exa?tly, the PR guy repeated that glass in CP2077 is destructible like 2-3 times. What else is new? The sky’s blue and grass is green?
If the whole interiors are destructible like bar counters, concrete walls, posts and something structural then we’re talking. So far it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

    3. okay, not defending them. Just one thing, do you play racing games (like simulation or similar)? Im wondering one thing……….

        1. Because im sure that you, me and many others play all the newer games thinking “oh wow next gen” but at the same time, those same “new” games are downgrades in many ways. Look up Sega Rally Revo (year 2007), this game has “mud physics”, real time surface terrain deformation which actually impacts handing on cars. Most of the newer racing games are downgrades in that aspect. Thats just one example…..

  2. So far the only thing I have seen about this game is hype. I am yet to see anything that makes me want to buy it. Guess I will just wait till after release to know the truth about this game.

    1. Timeshift? if you like the gimmick the game has, Singularity is another one that comes in mind from that era

      1. its not, the vie jumps when you shoot, so i turn off the view bobing and change the crosshair to an actual cross.

  3. “one of the criticisms of most current-gen games is the lack of environmental interactivity”
Ain’t that the truth John, games feel lifeless without it, Control was praised for it but when you step back you realize most games from a decade ago had it, even if not on it’s level.

  4. Glass, cover, bullet decals?these are not as big and effective as kapala is making them to be. it’s better to have these but we need way more destructibilty for that big portion of the level.
