In case you didn’t know, we were among the first that criticized The Witcher 3 for its downgraded graphics. While the final product looked great, it was nowhere close to what CD Projekt RED was showing in its pre-release trailers. And, from the looks of it, the company has learned its lesson. With only one exception, Cyberpunk 2077 looks significantly better than its E3 2018 demo.
YouTube’s ‘Cycu1’ has shared the following comparison video between the E3 2018 build and the 2020 retail version of Cyberpunk 2077. And, as you will immediately notice, the lighting system has been greatly improved. Seriously, in some cases the difference is huge.
Take for example the “inside-the-car” scene at 2:44. Compared to the final version, the E3 2018 demo looks flat and so old-gen-ish. The final build also appears to have more shadows, as well as better global illumination effects.
The only “downgrade” (if you can call it that) is the amount of the NPCs on screen. CD Projekt RED has reduced the number of NPCs players can encounter in the open-world area. However, and apart from this, everything looks significantly better in the final version.
It’s also worth noting that CD Projekt RED aims to fix some of the game’s visual issues. For instance, its latest update reduces vehicle pop-ins.

Yeah I agree. I certainly liked the less bloom and more natural pallet of the original. It is almost comic like on the retail version.
Ray Tracing is a really cool concept, but I agree with a lot of people here, it’s……”un-natural”. I guess cartoonish games would look ok, but real world environments tend to look shiny – everywhere. Too bright, too saturated, too reflective.
I believe after a while, it’ll get toned down to be more realistic. Right now they’re trying to sell it – and marketing tends to over-do everything. Money and all that.
And talking of money, ….ugg I dont want to get started. But video cards prices are ridiculous and I predict will start to push people towards consoles. :/

It’s not so much of an upgrade in the final version, the thing is that CD Project downplayed the graphics on the original showings.

In the 2018 gameplay demo, i can say that characters look better than retail, for sure. The rest is more or less the same, probably the exterior buildings looks better in vanilla but the demo was clearly a work in progress..
This scene “inside car” is good example how this game is broken on HDR monitors (all platforms). Game don’t support HGIG (!) and send SDR image with boosted brightness as HDR image. Read HDTVTest review for more details about broken HDR in CB77

Lmao you are comparing it to the console version. The fact that it’s running on Series X is irrelevant, the game has not been upgraded on next gen, it only gets higher resolution and 60 fps mode.

Seems that Cyberpunk 2077 is getting high scores from review sites but I really don’t understand how they can rate the game so highly after saying that the game has a lot of bugs.

i havent checked any of them, game is ok but its buggy and runs like trashm combat is bulletspongy borefest inbalanced and story feels like you are grinding through dialogues, it does not worth anything higher than a 8….after the bugs are fixed. Now its a 7. If you gonna make the dialogues and story borring at least make the combat good you hacks. Feels like gta iv all over “wow nice city you got there” but the gameplay sucks and so does the story.
The lighting (specially at night) and materials quality is key to cover the pretty meh NPCS (the only characters that look nice are the main ones that you interact with in dialogues). Given the scale of the game (being first person helps a lot) i would said is fine, but downgrade or not the difference is not that great. The game being an unoptomized janky buggy mess on launch doesnt help tho.
On 100 000 reviews on Steam, almost 30 000 are negative, and it’s growing fast.
And it’s not just because of bugs but because of how disappointing it is in general, gameplay and graphics-wise.
The game is a huge disappointment in general, not even close to be a true “FPS-RPG” like all Deus Ex games. (Let’s not even mention Bloodlines, it would be unfair. lol)

Playing at 1440p, graphics and RT maxed to ultra and phsyco where available. It’s the best looking game I’ve played. Gameplay wise, I’m playing stealth and really enjoying it. I’ve not noticed issues with vehicles or NPCs yet.
For any issues though you have to consider we are still in a pandemic. Devs are not able to work as closely together as they once did.

It was 60-70ish at the very beginning, now its almost 80 ish…. he is right. If they keep fixing the issues and bugs it can only get better and considering CD Project Red is not a studio which makes dozens of games, they can focus on fixing the bugs.
I didn’t deny that the majority of reviews are positive, but for a game which is described in all gaming websites as the new messiah, that’s still a very high number of negative reviews.

Agreed 100%. It truly is a disappointing “RPG.” I was expecting variety of side activities but all you have are “kill this group in this place” quests and “boxing”(LOL). Basic level crafting, no fun side activites(CDPR should put Gwent to add variety LOL), no interaction with NPCs nor surroundings besides making it a distraction for enemies. I mean with all the tech your character have on his body and CDPR couldn’t think of fun ways to do with it? You’re literally a living computer, geez. That aspect of your character alone could open up so much possibilities to do especially the hacking part as you do it a lot already in the game. So much for being an “RPG.”

Yeah, CDPR had 7 years so I was expecting Bethesda/Rockstar level of detail into the game. I mean, GTA V & RDR 2 have variety of side activities and they were not really what you call an RPG. While Elder Scrolls and Fallout didn’t have fun side activities, they have places you’d want to explore and great variety of quests. I was expecting a very different game but got a Dying Light-esque game. Still like it though coz I loved playing Dying Light.

Played it, story and presentation is good. Treat the open world like a high quality loading screen, it’s a fragile set dressing. It’s a linear action adventure game ala Mafia 2, but that’s an insult to the systems and mechanics of Mafia 2..

the consoles are not to blame, the company is. they are the ones who made that decision. they followed in Bethesda’s footsteps and released it on every platform ever.

Yes in majority of those comparisons, the lighting has improved that is bcoz of RTX tho! One important thing to note, the NPC population density has significantly decreased….maybe ~50% less from what it was in the E3 demo!
If you watch the video above, there are many more NPC’s in the retail. It’s not even remotely close.
There are still lots of places where people walk past a light source and don’t cast any shadows, for example. Same issue W3 had in lots of places, but I cut that one some slack back then. Not in 2020 though when Frostbite games do it better. It’s a weird mix of lighting methods.
I feel the more vibrant colour palette works against this game than the more muted one in the demo version. There also seems to be less softer shadows, blown out bloom and HDR in retail.
The lighting looks so blurry and foggy. I had to install the true hdr shader mod and enable clarity and contrast adaptive sharpening to remove the ugly blurry filter resulting from TAA.
I’m really disappointed in the animations more than anything. They feel like a huge downgrade. I do think the lighting looks better though.
