id Software’s classic FPS, Quake, will be free during QuakeCon 2020

Bethesda has announced that during QuakeCon 2020, id Software’s classic FPS, Quake, will be free to everyone. This basically means that the game will be free to own between August 7th and August 9th.

All you have to do in order to acquire your free copy of Quake is login to Bethesda.net. As the press release reads:

  • QUAKE for Free! – Throughout the weekend of QuakeCon, players can login to Bethesda.net and obtain a free digital copy of the original Quake on the Bethesda launcher. You must be logged into your Bethesda.net account to claim the free game.

Once you acquire your free copy of Quake, you can also download some mods for it. For instance, Slayer’s Testaments is a Doom Eternal mod for Quake. Arcane Dimensions HD is an unofficial expansion, featuring 22 new levels. There is also an AI-enhanced HD Texture Pack for this shooter, as well as vkQuake 1.0; a Quake 1 port using the Vulkan API.

Additionally, if donations hit the $10K goal, Bethesda will be giving away free copies of Quake 2. By doing this, the publisher will also give access to the game’s full Ray Tracing version. And, as I’ve already said, Quake 2 RTX is something  you have to experience.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. I really want Quake 5, either a Strogg story sequel to Quake 4 or a Lovecraftian sequel to Quake 1 (they’re both great, but I prefer a sequel to Quake 4)

Another thing I want with id Software is a single-player-ONLY game, because when will they understand that not much people buy their games for the multiplayer?

    1. I still replay Quake 4 every few years. Killing Strog just never gets old. It did seem like they left the game open for a Quake 5. Hope it happens one day soon.

    2. Quake 2 and 4 are really fun games but a bit generic, especially Q4. Q1 on the other hand is a game like no other, it’s original on every aspect from the aesthetics to the sound design and the awesome OST, if there’s one SP Quake sequel to work on, better go on the Q1 route IMO

    3. + 1 for that ! Exactly my thoughts !

I really want the devs to make a sequel to QUAKE 4 ! I enjoyed playing this single player game. Heck, I’m still playing it these days, along with other FPS titles like Project: Snowblind, Soldier of fortune 2, Star Wars Republic Commando, Quake 2, Hexen, HERETIC, RED FACTION 1, Wolfenstein, and many others.

These days actually we can’t predict anything, given the recent trend and craze of online/multiplayer/BR games. ?? ??

A lot of peeps prefer playing such type of online games. I wonder why did they make Quake Live in the first place ?

But a sequel to Quake 4 does makes sense IMO, because in end, after celebrating with the Rhino Squad, Kane receives word that he has new orders. But the end was a bit confusing. I think they sent Kane in the past where Quake Wars takes place ?? Others are saying this though:

“ID Software never had any intention of releasing a Quake 4. Raven Software took over that task. ”If there shall be a Quake 5, almost uncertainly Raven Software will be behind the reins.

But, we might not see a Quake 5 until after ID’s next release with a new game engine. Raven tends to only release 1 game using ID’s current engine.”

      1. It would make more sense for Kane or even Rhino Squad to be sent back in time, or eventually through a Slipgate into the Realm(I’m not sure what to call it?) that Ranger went into. That way, it could cover both the Strogg and the lovecraftian horrors that were around for the first game.

I honestly don’t trust anybody to do a full on Quake 1 Remake, or what ever people want.

A freshly, rebooted, Quake 5 would make significantly much more sense. MP could be done by the Quake Champions team, without all the powerups and stuff that people dislike about it.

That would be the best case scenario.

  2. 24 yo game for free (run via client) and 23 yo game MAY BE free if goal is met.

    HOW GENEROUS OF YOU, BETHESDA

  3. Quake 1 needs a sequel with a Doom 2016 treatment, it’s the best of the series, maybe even the best id Soft game ever

  4. Quake I was/is just fabulous and spectacular. Too Gothic and atmospheric for its time. Brutal and uncanny.
Quake II and latter were just different. Not actually Quake. Although Quake is actually remembered for III: Arena. *sigh*
Long forgotten now. Its all GaaS now.

    1. Quake III had the best multiplayer and the most skilled player base all over the world, that’s why it’s remembered.
20 years ago, Quake III and old Counter-Strike were all the rage in internet cafes, lans, competitions etc

  5. Quake 1 is truly one of the greatest games of all time. that gothic design and dark places, that very atmospheric sound effects. man i miss such a game. it was unique. the sequels were not really quake. they were different games and to me,inferior products.

  6. Think I’ll just stick to my GoG version. Shove your beth.net up your a**, Bethesda. I’d like to keep my private info just that. Private.
