EA Sports WRC runs with over 80fps at Native 4K/Max on NVIDIA RTX4090, but suffers from shader compilation stutters


EA Sports WRC is currently available to those who have pre-ordered it. So, since this new rally racing game uses Unreal Engine 4, we’ve decided to test it on the NVIDIA RTX4090. And, as you can see from the headline, we have some good and some bad news.

Like always, for our early benchmarks, we used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. We also used Windows 10 64-bit, as well as the GeForce 545.92 driver.

EA Sports WRC does not feature any built-in benchmark. So, for our benchmarks, we used the Batukangkung rally stage in Pacifico in rainy conditions. From what we could see, this was one of the most demanding scenarios in this new rally game. So, our custom benchmark scene will give us a pretty good idea of how the rest of the game runs.

Now the good news here is that EA Sports WRC can run with over 80fps at Native 4K/Max Settings on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX4090. The game also supports DLSS and FSR at launch, something that will allow even more PC gamers to enjoy it.

Now the reason I said that the game is using UE4 and not UE5 is because Ross Gowing, the game’s creative director, said so. Gowing has stated that EA Sports WRC is using the latest version of Unreal Engine 4. This means that there aren’t any Nanite or Lumen features. Still, despite that, the game’s lighting looks better and more advanced than anything we’ve seen in all previous WRC games (including the DiRT Rally series). Seriously, it’s miles better than the one used in WRC Generations. However, the rain/snow effects are a joke in this game, and it’s missing the amazing wind effects of WRC Generations.

Sadly, EA Sports WRC suffers from major shader compilation issues. These stutters can be really annoying, especially when driving at high speeds. I can’t believe that the developers have shipped this racing game without implementing a shader compilation procedure. This is unacceptable as your first races will be full of stutters. And yes, these stutters can completely destroy your experience. A stutter in this game can easily lead to a crash. What were the developers thinking?

Finally, EA Sports WRC uses the Denuvo anti-tamper tech. As such, our PC Performance Analysis will be slightly delayed. After all, the EA App will lock you out for 24 hours after five hardware changes.
