Rise of the Tomb Raider Sold Digitally Three Times Better on PC Than on Xbox One in Its First Month

SuperData Arcade has issued some interesting sales figures. According to them, Rise of the Tomb Raider sold almost three times as many units on PC than it did on console during its first month. Do note that this is only for digital sales, and not for overall sales.

As SuperData Arcade noted:

“Initial sales numbers on digital console forRise of the Tomb Raider were soft, due to sharing its release date with Fallout 4 and its exclusivity to Xbox One. The game sold almost three times as many units on PC than it did on console during its first month.”

        1. Batman AK didn’t’ sell well on the PC because:

          1. It was pirated a lot
          2. It was a broken piece of sh*t on release and months after.
          3. PC gaming is dead.
          4. It came out when other popular games came out.
          5. It has DRM.
6 . PC gamers had enough of Batman.

          😉

          1. Are you listing what you assume the reasons are in descending order of importance or is that supposed to be multiple choice?

    1. Good games sell well, DRM has nothing to do with it. The Witcher 3, Fallout 4 (though not a good game in my book) and GTA V all sold amazingly well without using Denuvo (and The Witcher 3 was even DRM free).

      1. And +1 to you to. Good games sell, and without Denuvo it might sell even better, I know plenty of people that would never tuch a game with crap that slow down their pc’s, and can hurt your hardware!

      1. Ill repeat myself

then why is it that batman failed so badly they had to remove it from steam and when it was later cracked, it was the only way of acquiring it apart from the retail version? Why is it that fallout 4 sells better than any other game on pc while it was pirated day 1? Aso witcher 3 and gta v.

It is almost as if pirates dont buy games.

The xbone version must have been pirated HARD and no ps4 version because of the filthy ps4 pirates. :S

      2. “We provide a lot of value in our games that goes beyond just the price. This is one of the key ways we fight against piracy, after all: providing gamers with more value than a pirate does. We actually generate more than half of our revenue from full-price sales, simply because we keep our prices reasonable in the first place.”

  1. Basically, Rise of the Tomb Raider completely failed on the XB1, especially when you compare it to Tomb Raider 2013, where it sold 3 times more in the same time frame.

      1. 6 weeks? You mean the pc version the console version is out since december.

Not it is not even half a million.

        1. The console version which we’re discussing sold 1 million before 2015 ended. The game came out 6 weeks before 2015 ended.

          Keep up mate

    1. No, they claimed it was Fallout 4 sharing the same release date yet PC sold 3 times more than XB1 and Fallout 4 out selling XB1 on PC, so you see it’s a lame excuse.

  2. this is what happens when developers make decent games on PC and not garbage ports locked at 30 frames per second on launch also known as Batman Arkham Knight. it’s not about having copy protection software it’s about making a game run right and that in itself will gain the respect of PC users and we will buy the game and there are far more PC gamers than xbox1 owners in the world

          1. Exactly, so true!
We dont need crap like Denuvo, it obviously have a bad impact for many people. It just says it self for what it’s doing/ how the POS work!

So all these DRM Starforce and now that pesky Denuvo are pretty much the same sh*t :/

          2. Wherever it has issues or not is not yet known but ill tell you one thing, just cause 3 did not need both denuvo and always online crap. If you lose connection while playing, it pauses the game and tries to reestablish connection with the scoring servers so it can tell you that poopyMaXslayerZZ14, has beat your falling of a cliff and dying score 3 minutes ago and you should care about it in a single player game.

  3. And still, Square Enix wasn’t happy with the sales of the last three main Tomb Raider games. Underworld was a great game, very beautiful and truthful to the classic Tomb Raider formula, and yet it sold poorly which resulted in some layoffs in Crystal Dynamics, and the reboot of the franchise.

Tomb Raider (2013) was at 75% off already after 4 months since the release, and “crossed the line of profitability ” only after almost a year, despite being the best selling TR game.

Now Rise of the Tomb Raider sales were simply destroyed by the deal with MS (delaying it on PS4 and PC, which both are more profitable than X1, was a financial suicide) and releasing it in the same time window with Fallout 4.

Maybe it’s time to let Lara go? Crystal Dynamics is a very talented studio who could certainly develop a completely new franchise. I wouldn’t mind about a new Legacy of Kain game either.
They may also get rid of Rhianna Prachett along the way… Overall quality will only improve, I guarantee it.

    1. Replaying Underworld again in 4K/144FPS, glorious PC gaming but yeah vastly superior to the remakes which have dumb down mechanics and blocked areas which are optional to go back to. Optional tombs in ROTTR is so f’ing moronic it makes me rage.

    2. “Now Rise of the Tomb Raider sales were simply destroyed by the deal with MS”

This is why I’m eager to see how Quantum Break will fare due to its Windows 10 exclusivity. It’s a weird situation where they are opening their game for a newer fan base(Windows 10 user) while at the same time locking out potential new ones(Windows 7 and 8 users).

It’s a PC game/port that only 1/3 of PC gamers can play.

      1. The idea is to get more people to Windows 10 and nothing more. At least MS made the deal much sweeter now because Windows 10 is free to anyone with a valid Windows key for the first year.

      2. Let’s not forget that SLI doesn’t work with windows store games, you can’t mod them, you can’t even edit the .ini file, and you can’t use any overlays. Any game coming out on the windows 10 store is dead on arrival.

    3. I don’t know about Leagacy of Kain, i have the fear they will ruin this franchise especially the dialogue in particular.

          1. What do you think? It’ll come out on PS4 only at the end of this year, when no one will give a sheet about it anymore.

    4. crystal dynamics talented? if they were they wouldn’t preached feminism and let a feminist that helms the series. to promote feminism and proof that females are not weak, it’s not doing the opposite. fat, chubby, flat chested, cursing and moaning entire game and killing men 99% of men brutally is not proving females are strong.

  4. This is because peasant kids doesn’t have credit cards so they can’t make online purchases, they run with their dollars down to the game stores and gets the games, either new but in many cases second handed.

  5. this is bad if it continue to sell but i think it’s saturated by now. it wont match xb1 sales. i for one hope the game didnt do well. i’m not happy to support game censorship and a game that promote feminism and gender war
