Modder ‘Phroster’ has released two mods that aim to fix the DX12 shader compilation stutters of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. So, if you are planning to play them before FF7 Revelation comes out, you should definitely use them.
For those who did not know, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth do not compile their shaders when you first launch them. Instead, these games will compile the shaders while playing them. This results in in-game stutters, which are what we all call “shader compilation stutters”.
To fix, or at least minimize those stutters, Phroster released a mod that will compile PSOs asynchronously in the background. This mod is for the DX12 version of the game.
It’s worth noting that this mod may have conflicts with some Engine.ini tweaks. So, if you have modified it, you may experience crashes, broken visuals, worse performance, or unstable loading. Therefore, the modder suggests removing any tweaks you have made to it.
Also note that this mod attempts to fix only the DX12 shader compilation stutters. It will not fix the asset streaming or traversal stutters. These will still occur.
You can download the mods from here and here. To install them, you’ll simply have to drop the “d3d12.dll” file inside the main game folder (that’s the one that contains the .EXE executable file). To uninstall it, you’ll just have to delete the “d3d12.dll” file. And that’s it.
Square Enix plans to release Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on PC in Spring 2027. Hopefully, this final chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will include a shader compilation step.
At this point, it is unlikely that Square Enix will add such a feature to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Support for those games appears to have ended, as the team is now focused on Revelation. Because of that, we can only rely on mods to fix or minimize those issues. And while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has a shader compilation step, it does not compile all of the shaders. As such, you still get shader compilation stutters while playing.
Speaking of FF7 Rebirth, I also suggest using this 4K Texture Pack. This pack overhauls over 3900 textures. And trust me, the game desperately needed a 4K Mod as a lot of the vanilla textures looked bad.
Then we have this amazing first-person mod. This is another must-have mod for FF7 Rebirth. This mod lets you explore the world of the game in first-person mode. During fights, it switches back to a third-person viewpoint. As such, it feels like an official first-person exploration mode. It’s really cool, so be sure to download it from here.
Owners of Final Fantasy 7 Remake can also use this 4K/8K Texture Pack to improve all of the game’s textures. Both Remake and Rebirth had a lot of low-res textures. Thus, these 4K Texture Packs are a must for those who want to play them.
Kudos to our reader ‘Justin’ (let’s go Justiiiiiiiiin – only Street Fighter fans will get this) for bringing this to our attention!
