AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX feature

AMD has chickened out at the last minute regarding RDNA 4, and I can’t stop laughing about it

A lot of PC gamers were expecting AMD to officially reveal its RDNA 4 GPUs during its keynote at CES 2025. However, it appears that the red team chickened out at the last minute. Nope. AMD did NOT reveal its RDNA 4 GPUs. Not only that but it has thrown all of its media partners under the bus. And you know what? I can’t stop laughing about it.

You see, AMD did hold a CES 2025 media pre-briefing about its RDNA 4 GPUs. This actually happened. During that event, the red team shared some slides and details about its new GPUs. However, during its keynote, AMD did not mention RDNA4 at all.

What this clusterf’ck means is that a lot of YouTubers and websites already have videos and articles about “AMD revealing the RDNA 4 GPUs“. In those videos, they’ve shared what AMD told them during the pre-briefing. And that’s it. As I said, though, no. AMD has not announced anything. It has simply chickened out.

Okay okay. To be fair, during its keynote, AMD did confirm FSR 4.0. The red team said that they have FSR 4.0 which will be first introduced in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. And that’s all we got about the RDNA 4 architecture. I mean, do you want more than that? Why?

A lot speculate that AMD is currently afraid of what NVIDIA will reveal in a few hours. So, instead of exposing themselves, AMD is simply waiting for NVIDIA to reveal its RTX 50 series. Then, once AMD sees how NVIDIA has priced its GPUs, it will most likely adjust its own prices so that it can be competitive with them.

In other words, AMD is playing catch-up once again. Oh, and did I mention that FSR 4.0 will most likely be exclusive to the RDNA 4 GPUs? Yep, AMD is locking features behind its latest GPUs. It’s doing EXACTLY what NVIDIA has been doing all these years.

And I know. FSR 4.0 requires the new hardware that is present in the RDNA4 GPUs. That’s completely fine. However, that was also the case with DLSS 3. So, you can’t complain about NVIDIA locking features behind its latest GPUs, and not about AMD.

And there you have it. I’ll link below two videos that have all the information about the RDNA 4 GPUs. However, don’t expect anything major as AMD hasn’t still revealed any prices, specs or gaming benchmarks. Those may come later this quarter.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. It makes sense they want to wait for the big dog to attempt to appropriately price their stack. They have an even finer line to walk because it appears that Arc has been taking more out of their market share than Nvidia's. I think the cards will be fine but AMD's launch pricing has not been. Also I'd like to see what features Nvidia is going to try to lock to 50-Series/DLSS4 before making that leap.

    1. They have chickened out. They revealed the GPUs to the media during a pre-brief with an embargo that was lifted when the keynote ended. They were supposed to announce RDNA 4 during their keynote. That was the plan. That's what every company does (it announces exactly what it reveals during its pre-briefings). At the last minute, they removed everything related to RDNA 4 (aside from FSR 4.0).

      1. Obviously not every company does it.
they can choose what to announce and what not to announce. that's the point everyone is missing. They made a choice and you (and others) made an assumption based on the actions of other companies.
they can discuss things out before the keynote and make the final choice that they would rather dedicate more time to explain these gpus new in depth.
companies and corporations so this type of thing all the time. If you've ever seen any other time of trade show, you'd understand.

    1. The tone will be similar if in a couple of hours Jensen comes out and just says "For PC gamers, we are working on the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080. That's it. Bye everyone. And now to AI." (without sharing anything other at all).

  2. Mmmmm… This abrasive tone sounds very immature and trashy, it really isn't making the site any favors. The trashy comments section is already enough.
I'd drop it yesterday, even if you had a point.

  3. They didn't "lock" FSR 4. It's an AI technology–unlike previous versions of FSR 4. To accomplish this, it's designed to use the AI cores. It is highly dependent on the architecture.

    1. In other words, let's use time to cover our miseries. That is really bad and even worse by every occurring minute. Adding salts to the wound, FSR4 is RDNA4 exclusive. That is basically giving Nvidia another simple win and encouragement to paywall DLSS4 on RTX50!

  4. However, during its keynote, AMD did not mention RDNA4 at all.

They did mention RDNA4 but very briefly, when talking about FSR4 coming to BO6 later this year.

  5. Mmmmm… The abrasive "muahaha" tone sounds very immature and trashy, it really isn't making the site any favors. The trashy comments section is already enough.
I'd drop it yesterday, even if you had a point.

      1. so pointing out the blatant lies and other shortcomings of AMD makes you a fanboy?
        classic AMD minion logic

        1. AMD never promised to talk about the 9000 Series at CES, so they didn't lie and there no shortcomings to speak off.

Considering all the data we got so far, the RX 9070 reaches the RX 7900 performance at half the cost so there really nothing to complain about.

While if you wanna talk lies, the NVidia benchmarks were run with DLSS 4 and Framegen.

So yes, John is a fanboy for insulting AMD and sugar cutting NVidia issues over the course of 5 years.

  6. Paul Alcorn from TOM's HW actually interviewed some AMD execs (David McAfee and Frank Azor), and according to them, the omission to not include these GPUs was a strict time limit that impeded their ability to share enough information.

    Sounds inexcusably weird though.

AMD explained that the keynote was only 45 minutes long, and with a slew of other products to announce, the company simply couldn't dedicate enough time in the keynote presentation to the new GPUs to correctly frame the product.

Ultimately, they would have only had about five minutes to introduce the new GPUs.

    Really ?

Other factors also impacted their decision, like Nvidia's pending GPU announcement, however, AMD now plans to reveal more details later this quarter.
    .

    1. "Graphics products and graphics launches are complicated, and there's a lot that has to be explained to really do it justice. We wanted to make sure, as we launch RDNA 4, that we do it justice and we cover the hardware improvements, the technology, the software, the FSR4, and the driver enhancements. All of that needs to be covered to really satisfy what gaming enthusiasts care about most,"

      McAfee said.

      1. That is even funnier if you look at it on their own terms, a little differently. RX 9000 GPUs are basically a refresh and AI+RT tuned units of RX 7000 GPUs. This would have been a straight walk in the park demo for them even if we take their time limit restrictions to be true. Maybe 15min tops. That's it.

    2. Companies are full aware of the time limit restrictions months before the keynote, it didn't "suddenly happen." So, if they were fully aware that they wouldn't include the RDNA4 at the keynote, they wouldn't imply to the pre-briefing that they would announce the cards at CES 2025.

The fact they removed it at the last minute implies that AMD is not confident in its product. If it was, it would advertise it left and right (exactly like they did with their CPUs).

Imagine launching a new PC gaming GPU and not taking more "time" from the mobile segment. It's one of the biggest screw ups. Or AMD simply considers its Radeon division (and its gamers) as "third-class citizens."

Whichever way you look at it, it paints a really bad image on AMD.

      1. The fact they removed it at the last minute implies that AMD is not confident in its product.

Whichever way you look at it, it paints a really bad image on AMD.

Yeah, couldn't agree more on this !

Actually, the whole reasoning provided by the AMD reps for the lack of info is quite funny and baseless to begin with.

Because we all know this CES keynote wasn't any sudden event which AMD was not aware of.

        1. Also, NVIDIA’s keynote was two whole hours. AMD’s was only 42 minutes. If NVIDIA can have a lengthier keynote then surely AMD could have one too. So, I really don’t buy that “time limit restriction” excuse. If they wanted, they’d have an additional hour (or even more) to detail RDNA4.

          1. No doubt they are massaging the facts on this matter.

Does not bode well for this generation's GPU launch from AMD.

            Disappointing to say the least.

  7. Not really a surprise. AMD naming the gpu 9070 to confuse customers, locking FSR4 to the new gpus, waiting to see how daddy nvidia prices their cards. The gpu division is a clusterf*ck as always

  8. honestly, since i just want performance for bang for my buck, ignoring framegen and upscaling. i might just take the card that has the most rasterperformance, again. i really do not like to rely on framegeneration for anything. while upscaling can be tolerated but only because we are forced to tolerate TAA as the backbone of all rendering nowadays. unfortunately.

  9. I said it before. AMD never was in the competition since 7970 GHz Edition. After tonight's Nvidia presentation, there is no AMD in the competition once again and this time even harder (that is why they did show ZERO GPU in their keynote). There was no performance slides in the presentation for sure but Jenson was all confidently glowing, especially during that GeForce segment.

  10. Chickened out? They showed a vast selection of CPUs, for desktop and mobile, APU and so on. AMD isn't just a a graphic vendor like NVIDIA.
By the way you saw what CPU Nvida used for their slides? 9800x3D.

  11. nVidia laugh at us, you laugh at AMD, we laugh at Intel. but at the end of the day, we are F**ed with these hardwares, their prices, AI garbage stuff, power consumptions.

    1. right, people should be looking for best value in times like this instead of clinging to fanboyism and brand wars
