Bandai Namco has released a video, showcasing 8 minutes of gameplay from Unknown 9: Awakening. Developed by Reflector Entertainment, Unknown 9: Awakening is a third-person action-adventure game.
In this game, you’ll assume the role of Haroona. Haroona is a Quaestor born with the ability to venture into a mysterious dimension that overlaps our own, known only as the Fold. On her quest for powerful hidden knowledge, Haroona will learn to master her unique connection to the Fold, which allows her to channel its powers into our world.
Players will leverage Haroona’s mastery of the Fold and choose their own playstyle. For instance, they’ll be able to step into their enemies to control them. They’ll also be able to dodge bullets, vanish in plain sight, hurl Umbric energy at their opponents, and more.
Bandai Namco was originally planning to release this game in Summer 2024. However, it appears that it has delayed it until Fall 2024.
To be honest, I’m not that impressed by this gameplay video. Unknown 9: Awakening looks really rough, with an average enemy AI and unpolished combat animations. Reflector Entertainment is a small team, so we should be realistic here. This team will never compete with other triple-A studios like Ubisoft or Naughty Dog. So, we shouldn’t be criticizing them as heavily. However, this gameplay video did not impress me at all. In fact, it got me bored. So, that’s not a good sign.
The game’s price is also a huge topic. Right now, it doesn’t have any. So, if this is a $30 game, then most PC gamers will be able to cut it some slack. However, if this is a $50+ game, then I’m sorry but it will need a lot of work and polish to get me excited.
Anyway, I don’t know. Perhaps it’s just me. Watch it and tell me your thoughts!

I mean, to be fair this was exactly how a certain number of non-white gamers used to feel during the golden years. It's why things like ESG exists. Not trying to make an excuse for this game since I generally don't like most modern female protagonists anyway, but this is in some ways a retaliation/response of what came before. Like everything else in life it will eventually run its course and the pendulum will swing back. At least that's the hope anyway.

I don’t disagree. I was just making a point that these people who are pushing all of these things were likely complaining about the overwhelming amount of whiteness in gaming long before ESG was a thing. Diversity in gaming and entertainment as a whole doesn’t always have to have a negative connotation to it. We’ve had multiple black and other minority protagonists in the past which were well thought-out and were received positively by people of all spectrum.
There’s nothing inherently wrong about people wanting to see more characters than the typical default white male archetype we became so used to seeing. As long it comes naturally, right? What we’re seeing right now is something a lot of us never fathomed. Obviously it feels out of place and unnatural a lot of the times and it deserves be called out for it. But I hope people understand that there’s a distinct difference between the diversity you see in games like the Half-Life and Left 4 Dead series, Telltales’ The Walking Dead, Uncharted 1-3, Starhawk and many more compared to the things you see today.

There’s none of that dehumanisation or police brutality which continues to exist in the West. As I mentioned before, white Westerners are quite unique when it comes to their intolerance. If I was in their place of course I’d hold a grudge against the people who are most privileged and responsible for my life being the way it is. But if they have it all good today then yes it’s ridiculous for them to keep moaning about it. But that’s not always the case, is it?

Well I agree that the people who are in charge and pushing all of this drivel and those who support it are narcissistic and mentally ill. And I also think good scriptwriting and world-building are the most crucial components for believability and relatability. It's the reason why people love games like the Half-Life franchise and dislike what The Last of Us turned into.
I just think there's a fundamental difference from those who would like to see more and better representation in entertainment than those who have victimised themselves while using those very same talking points and gaslighting people in the process. There's nothing inherently wrong about wanting to see more beyond the default persona which we're all so used to seeing. It would be ridiculous for me as a black man to demand more representation in Japanese entertainment because Japan is not the US or the UK.

The game is not even out yet and everyone has already made their minds up. Unattractive, girl-boss protagonists are dime a dozen. The "story architect" is Kim Belair of Sweet Baby, so chances are the protagonist will end up a vapid, grating vessel for low-IQ activism.
