Doom 4 feature

New screenshots surface from the canceled “Call of Duty” Doom 4 game

In case you weren’t aware, id Software was working on a Call of Duty-inspired Doom game (before ditching it in favor of the amazing Doom 2016 reboot). And yesterday, some new screenshots surfaced from it.

These new screenshots show off a resistance soldier (that Blur Studio used in the unreleased Doom 4 trailer). These shots can give you an idea of the game’s direction and art style.

Doom 4 would originally take place on Earth, and featured gameplay mechanics similar to those of the Call of Duty games. During development, id Software felt that this was wrong, and decided to cancel it so that it could create a game that was closer to the classic Doom games.

Now while this does not look impressive, I’d really love to play it.  Again, this doesn’t feel like a Doom game. Still, I’m a bit curious about it. It’s the same feeling I have about the canceled versions of Duke Nukem Forever (though in DNF’s case, those canceled versions may be better than the final product).

Lastly, you can find more screenshots from this Doom 4 game here. There was also a video with in-game footage from a prototype version that is, sadly, no longer available.

Enjoy!

  1. I love the idea of a “realistic” Doom taking place on Earth. No super-marine with superhero superpowers, just a regular marine. Some scripted sequences, but not a full Call of Duty clone. The screenshots and video leaked a few years earlier did look pretty cool.

I love game development history and would very much love if studios would release early material like this, officially. I’m fascinated with early Doom builds, early Quake ideas, Unreal pre-alphas, Half-Life 1 & 2… I want more.

    1. I’m sure a lot of Doom fans simply weren’t interested in that more realistic version and that’s why id decided against continuing its development. It just wouldn’t have been a Doom game. It would probably be great as something else, but would not have fit Doom. Doom isn’t about trying to be realistic. Even the classic games themselves the Doom marine ran at godly speeds even for just being a normal human before getting his powers. It’s just a made up world where we fight demons to our hearts content

  2. So Doom 4 is the cancelled sequel to Doom 3? Probably.

I wonder if DNF hate seems to be early bugs annoying early adopters? I played DNF plus expansion and didn’t hate it, it was a decent game.

    1. Doom 4 is not a sequel of Doom 3 and not a reboot either.
Remember that Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil ended with the hellish forces defeated and the portal had been permanently closed.
Doom 4 wanted to show the realistic depiction of hell breaking loose on earth if UAC couldn’t stop it/gets corrupted by it.

      1. Doom 3 was a reboot of Doom 1, and regardless of the ending on the expansion, we would end up having the reboot of Doom 2 in the form of Doom 4. Then Doom 2016 was another reboot of Doom 1, and Doom Eternal the reboot of Doom 2.

  3. I seem to recall a DNF dev post mortum saying the defunct early to mid 2000s DNF video was a facade of a game that was propped up with a cardboard movie poster. The game looked amazing but that the video was a scripted trailer and was not actual gameplay.

  4. for some reason, many wypepo on the internet believe their race is the default, and should be in all media. thank you for the letter from Myopia, my fragile-minded friend

    1. Do you expect an African developer to fill their games with white or Asians? You are the very essense of rancid poossy.

      1. hello retrd. I guess people like you forget that 40% of America’s population is non-white. I guess by your logic non-whites should see AT LEAST 40% representation in all media. is that what you crackers are asking for? because it sure seems like it

        1. Hello low IQ subhuman. You forget that most western media over represents your crime statistic brethren, and same with fajjots, especially black lezzers.

    2. Ahem, it IS the default you imbecile.

Nothing worse then bunch of minorities living in White peoples domain, thinking that white people shouldn’t make games about themselves or to appeal to the group with most money.

Which Ethnicity is has the majority in USA? White people
Who has the biggest buying in USA? White males

Which Ethnicity is has the majority in USA? White people
Who has the biggest buying power? White males

Who is the overwhelming majority in EU? White people
Which group has the highest buying power in EU? White males .

Where do they make video games? USA, Canada, EU

  5. I’m curious as to how it was “horrible” exactly. It was many times better than any other single player FPS game

    1. Its TRASH, its worse then Doom 3 and that one wasn’t good either.

Its trash because t plays like mobile games: Area Shooter

Walk a bit, enter open area > doors close off, shoot enemies to open doors

      Repeat till the game ends.

You just go from room to room, shooting same enemies , doing the same thing over and over again, all battles are forced on you, there is no strategy, nothing, you just run around closed areas until you kill everyone, its horrible.

Its like cheap mobile game: Just rooms filled with enemies

      1. If you genuinely believe there’s “no strategy” involved, then you are not playing the game to its fullest potential. But that’s fine, if you want to play on the easiest mode, and pretend it’s just the same stuff, you do you.

And the funny thing is in EVERY game you literally do the same thing over and over. That’s how games work. If it’s a shooter, you shoot things. If it’s a puzzle game, you do puzzles. I’m not sure what you exactly expect from a game ?

        1. No, even in COD you have different levels, no walled of sections, you push forward, have missions in DIFFERENT locations
you never locked in one room until you kill everyone, its the dumbest thing ever.
HL and HALO 1,2,3 [remakes] are good shooters, gears even being 3rd person is good shooter, Doom is just repetitive room shooter, simple and pointless.
Basically, there is nothing more idiotic then closing of section of the level and spawning tons of enemies.

          1. Don’t waste your breath on them.
Doom games are dumb and have always been that way.
There are actually great shooters like F.E.A.R., Max Payne 1&2, Titanfall 2, etc.
Yet they don’t get that much praise by comparison.
Doom franchise has always been lame, and 2016 didn’t change that one bit.

          2. There are this sub-genre, called Thinking Man FPS/Shooter.

Shooter that have story and progression and usually some RPG elements, gear and so on.

            Half Life
            Bioshock
            FEAR
            Singularity
            Wolfeinstein II
            Chernoblite

            Terminator [the last one]

    1. As the same person who tweeted this discovery, I would like to play this version of the game too no matter if it was unfinished. Release the latest build, id Software!

  6. They made a huge mistake by not finishing this, the new doom games are dumb, i cant stand them.

Basically They cheap room shooter, go in, room closed, kill everyone, go farther, next room walled off, kill everyone and so on.
Its pure trash, the story is basic.
Its like a mobile game where you dont have an interesting story or good gameplay, just shooting in copy pasted walled of sections, killing more and more enemies.
