Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 exceeded Microsoft’s expectations, sold more than expected

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Xbox marketing head Aaron Greenberg said that both Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 exceeded Microsoft’s expectations. In other words, these two titles were critically acclaimed for Microsoft and sold more than the company expected.

At the time of writing, Sea of Thieves has over 5 million players and State of Decay 2 has more than 3 million players.

As Greenberg told GamesIndustry.

“Sea of Thieves is a big priority for us. Both Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 were, for us, breakout hits of the spring, They exceeded what we expected them to do. Sea of Thieves has over 5 million players, State of Decay 2 has more than 3 million players. They both sold more than we expected and drove a lot of great engagement with Game Pass.”

  1. “Sea of Thieves has over 5 million players”

    WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?

“State of Decay 2 has more than 3 million players.”

Yeah well, zombies, ms store…no thanks. How many of those are on pc?

    1. I remember reading when Sea of Thieves reached 2M, only 250k were on PC, so today I would roughly say 15-20% (and I’m generous) of the user base is on PC.

  2. That’s troubling, given that they are both garbage.

People pay for garbage these days? Damn, I’m in the wrong business.

  3. Ben Decker, head of gaming services at Microsoft about GamePass:

“It’s simply an opportunity for discovery.”
“But what we hear now is, ‘I don’t want thousands and thousands of games, I want really good games.”

Two sentences which clearly suits very well to Sea Of Thieves or State Of Decay 2 for example.

These games have reached milestones of 5 million and 3 million of players
Nevertheless, not enough appealing to keep them…

  4. Misleading ads and paid off to fake hype… excuse me… “sponsored” streamers, youtubers, and gaming sites can do absolute wonders for glorified mobile games missing content and broken for months.
