YouTube’s ‘Cycu1’ has shared a video that compares the upcoming remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with its original 2006 version. This early graphics comparison is based on the leaked screenshots that surfaced online a few days ago.
Now the cool thing here is that Cycu1 used identical scenes under the same weather conditions. In other words, this is a 1-1 comparison. As such, we can easily see the visual improvements that the remaster brings to the table.
The lighting is perhaps the biggest improvement of Oblivion Remastered. According to reports, the remaster will be using Unreal Engine 5 for its renderer. So, if that’s the case, we can assume that it will take advantage of Lumen. Thanks to the new lighting, we also have more advanced shadows.
From the looks of it, Virtuous has rebuilt almost everything. All objects and characters have more polygons now. Take, for example, the statue in the second comparison. The devs have recreated it, and as a result of that, it looks more detailed. The same can be said about the enemy in the third comparison.
Not only that, but the indoor environments during the night look WAY BETTER than before. The original version of Oblivion did not feature any major AO effects. As such, the indoor environments at night looked flat. On the other hand, the remaster looks much better thanks to its new more advanced lighting system.
Let’s also address the elephant in the room. Does the remaster look better than Oblivion modded? Or is it underwhelming as the remasters of the GTA Trilogy? In my opinion, Oblivion Remastered looks WAY BETTER than Oblivion modded. I’ve played Oblivion with mods. And no. You can’t make the original game look as good as what we see in the remaster.
Overall, I like the remaster better in all of the comparison screenshots. And just to be clear, these screenshots came from a leak, so they’re low-quality and a little blurry. Even with that, I still think the remaster looks much better. But that’s just my opinion.
According to the latest rumor, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered will come out next week. Microsoft and Bethesda will most likely release it during the week of April 21st. This means that we’ll get it sometime between April 21st and April 25th. We still don’t have an exact ETA for when it will come out. Naturally, though, we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
