Square Enix has just released Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC. And, you know what? We’ve decided to test the game at 8K and see whether the NVIDIA RTX 5090 can run it. So, is 8K gaming possible now? Let’s find out.
For our 8K test, we used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D with 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090. We also used Windows 10 64-bit, and the GeForce 571.86 driver. Moreover, we’ve disabled the second CCD on our 7950X3D. Plus, we’re using the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG32UCDM monitor, which is a 32” 4K/240Hz/HDR monitor.
To get an 8K resolution, we used DSR 4X on our 4K PC monitor. To prove that this video is indeed at 8K, here are some direct screenshots from it. So, go ahead and take a look at them.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth does not support DLSS 3 Frame Generation. Instead, the game only has support for DLSS 3 Super Resolution. And despite that, the NVIDIA RTX 5090 is able to offer playable framerates at 8K.
With DLSS 3 Quality Mode, we were able to get 60FPS in the first areas. Even during combat, the game felt smooth. And, since we’ve only used DLSS 3 Super Resolution, there is no hit in input latency.
Now I’m not saying that Native 8K gaming is possible. However, the fact that we can even run a modern-day triple-A game at 8K with playable framerates is mindblowing. At least in my opinion.
What’s also funny here is that FF7 Rebirth had major image quality issues on PS5 and PS5 Pro. But on PC? If you have a high-end GPU, you can enjoy it with smooth framerates at ridiculously high resolutions.
But why run a game at 8K you might ask. Well, the answer is simple. At 8K with DLSS Quality or Performance, you get a better image quality than Native 4K. It’s similar to using 4K DLSS Performance vs 1080p. And, even if you don’t have an 8K monitor, you can get the benefits of it on your 4K monitor. For those who lived in the 90s and 00s, that’s what you could achieve with SSAA.
Again, I’m not saying that you should game at 8K. And no, the NVIDIA RTX 5090 cannot run games at Native 8K. Still, this is a cool concept we’ll be exploring. Until then, enjoy the screenshots and video!
