How Epic Games has managed to slip the chance of getting PC gaming back to their side

I seriously didn’t expect to be writting such an editorial piece… again. You see, when Epic Games announced that they were developing a PC game, we were delighted. Like little kids, we imagined a new Unreal Tournament game or a triple-A FPS/third person title that would push the graphical boundaries. In fact, after both Unreal Engine 4’s and Unreal Engine 3’s demonstration, we’d expecting for something mind-blowing. A Blade Runner game, powered by Unreal Engine 4? Who would say no to that? Fast forward a couple of months and here we are today, with Epic Games finally revealing the game that will be coming exclusively on the PC. Not only that, but Rein re-confirmed that the engine will scale down on all other devices and stated that it will be ‘rocking up and down the entire scale of next gen devices‘. Comparison: Next-Generation (Unreal Engine 4) vs Current-Generation (CryEngine 3 / Creation)

We bet that a lot of you are wondering how current-generation engines compare to the upcoming, next-generation version of the Unreal Engine, right? Well, time to find out. In this special feature, we compare Crysis 2’s (CryEngine 3) and Skyrim’s engine (the Creation engine) with Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. Although there aren’t similar assets to compare with, we put together screenshots with almost identical scenes. We should also note that for the ‘particles test’ comparison, we used a Crysis shot with an extreme particles mod that is beyond anything we’ve ever seen. We decided to also include a video from this mod, so make sure to watch it and notice how all those sparks are bouncing around without hitting the framerate. So, what do you think? Is Unreal Engine 4 as ‘next-gen’ as you thought it would be? Continue reading Comparison: Next-Generation (Unreal Engine 4) vs Current-Generation (CryEngine 3 / Creation)

Unreal Engine 4 looks lovely but we have to admit that we were not shocked as much as when Epic showcased Unreal Engine 3, back in the days. Or when we saw the Samaritan Tech Demo. To put it simple; although the screenshots are not as impressive as the Samaritan Tech Demo, they look beautiful and up-to-date with what other modern/future game engines can do. Unreal Engine 4 will be officially revealed in E3, this June, so stay tuned for more. Enjoy! Continue reading Unreal Engine 4 – 7 new screenshots revealed

First Unreal Engine 4 Shots showcase a Skyrim-like game; could this be Epic’s PC exclusive title?

Great news for graphics whores as Epic Games has revealed the first set of screenshots from the next version of their acclaimed engine, the Unreal Engine. These Unreal Engine 4 shots showcase a game (or a tech demo) that looks similar to Skyrim. We do know that Skyrim was a big success to the PC and Epic Games have revealed during GDC2012 that they’re developing a PC exclusive title. Naturally, most of us expected this title to be a showcase title for Unreal Engine 4, so could these screenshots actually be from the PC exclusive title that Epic has in store for us? One can only guess but if that’s the case, we can expect an RPG game from the studio that brought us the Unreal and the Gears of War series. But then again, the studio stated that the PC exclusive title would be a shooter and this is definitely not a shooter. So, a PC exclusive title or an RPG for next-generation platforms? Whatever the case might be, you can enjoy the shots after the jump! Continue reading First Unreal Engine 4 Shots showcase a Skyrim-like game; could this be Epic’s PC exclusive title?
