Another day, another Mantle article. A couple of days ago, French website Hardware interviewed AMD’s Raja Koduri who shared some interesting information about the red team’s upcoming API. According to Raja, Microsoft was well aware of the existence of Mantle. Not only that, but AMD will continue working with Microsoft on all the latest versions of DirectX, just like they’ve been doing this whole time. In case you did not get the memo with our earlier article about Batman: Arkham Origins’ DRM, GFWL is going down. And a couple of hours ago, Microsoft itself revealed that the service will be discontinued on July 1st, 2014. This information was shared on Age of Empires Online support page, however Microsoft was quick to react and re-edited that page. Havok announced today that Microsoft and 343 Industries have integrated Havok’s AI technology into Halo: Spartan Assault on Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. The new top down shooter is set in the intense and dangerous Halo universe and provides an advanced gameplay experience with accessible controls for the ideal pick-up-and-play mobile title. Well, we all saw that coming. In an attempt to promote its latest OS, Microsoft has officially revealed the new version of its DX API. And as you may have guessed, it is coming exclusively on Windows 8.1 and Xbox One. DirectX 11.2 was presented at its Build Conference, and you can find the keynotes video below. Perhaps the best feature of DX11.2, Tiled Resources, is demoed at around the first one hour mark. With Tiled Resources, Direct3D 11.2 introduces support for hardware virtual resources, allowing the creation of massive textures using minimal memory, and permitting improved bandwidth efficiency. Let’s see now how PC gamers and developers will respond to Microsoft’s move, and whether the former will be forced to upgrade their systems – yet again – for this DX exclusivity!
