Unicorn Overlord feature

The canceled Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu, runs Unicorn Overlord with 60fps

Unicorn Overlord is a new tactical RPG that just came out on Nintendo Switch. And even though the big “N” has shut down Yusu, this canceled Nintendo Switch emulator can run this game with 60fps on PC.

YouTube’s ‘reznoire’ posted a video featuring more than 7 minutes of gameplay from it. And, as we can see, the game is playable on Yuzu. There don’t seem to be any major visual or graphical issues. Plus, the performance looks really good.

To capture this gameplay footage, reznoire used an Intel Core i9-14900K with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and 48GB of RAM. It’s a pretty high-end PC system. The good news though is that reznoire has included the MSI Afterburner/Rivatunner overlay in the video. And, as we can see, the RTX4090 was used at around 60%.

This isn’t the first time we see a Nintendo Switch game running this well on emulators on launch day. Red Dead RedemptionBayonetta 3Monster Hunter RiseXenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, and Pikmin 4 were all playable on PC the moment they came out. Not only that but some games were playable on the Nintendo Switch emulators, even before their official release date. Such examples are Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, Super Mario Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This shows how ahead of the curve these emulators were. And this is another reason why Nintendo wanted to shut Yuzu down.

As we’ve reported, Nintendo has shut down Yuzu, so you can’t download it legally from the Internet. But there are two other Nintendo Switch emulators going around called Suyu and Nuzu. Since they’re based on Yuzu, they should be able to play Unicorn Overlord too. I’ve just checked and the Github page for Suyu is still available. However, the team behind Nuzu has removed it. So, right now, you can download Suyu. That, or you can try Ryujinx.

In terms of tech and graphics, Unicorn Overlord is a somewhat “simple” game. Don’t get me wrong, it has an amazing art style and it looks great. However, it’s not as demanding as the latest Zelda games. As such, even Ryujinx should be able to run it with 60fps.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
