This mod for Mafia 2 lets you free roam right from the start and change the time of day at will

ModdedGames has released a really interesting mod for the second Mafia game. As its title suggests, the Free Ride 2.2 mod makes free roam possible in Mafia 2 without even starting the campaign story mode.

With this mod, players can change the time of day, save their progress, and explore Empire Bay. All safehouses will be immediately unlocked and both Joe and Henry can follow you.

Those interested can download Mafia 2 Free Ride 2.2 mod from here, and here is how you can install this mod:

  • Drag the folder called “cnt_free_ride_game” found in the mod’s .zip file to “C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Mafia II/pc/dlcs“.
  • If you’re running a non-Steam version, drag it to your “/Mafia II/pc/dlcs folder, wherever it may be.
  • Add the dlc: “cnt_free_ride_game” to the folder
  • Play

Have fun!

  1. Btw, I haven’t played this game yet, but is it really worth buying Mafia 2 ?

I bought Mafia 3, without playing any of the previous titles in this IP.

But, Mafia 3 was too boring, and it was also repetitive as well, imo. Got bored, so I left the game without finishing the main story line. It also ran very poorly on my RIG, RX 480 GPU, i7 4790 CPU….

How is Mafia 2’s story, and Gameplay ? Reviews seem to be pretty good though.

    1. Mafia 2 is short and sweet. It’s all story, no filler, no repetitive stuff, no side missions either.

And the story and missions are great!

It’s optimized superb. it even has Physx on Medium running great on CPU. (even more so if you tweak some files)

    2. Mafia II was one of the nost egregious exmaples of publisher meddling in development process. Daniel Vavra (he heads Warhead Studios these days) who was head of Illusion Softworks (which was renamed 2K Chezh at the time due to being bought out by 2K) clashed with 2K constantly and consequently left the studio about one year before the game’s release.

And Take Two rushed the game and all of the content that was originally supposed to be in the main game was cut out and released as poor DLCs.

Mafia II – is a true testament to how great the game could’ve been if it were not for Take Two meddling. And you can see it while playing, that game had so much potentioal that unfortunately was unfulfilled.
