Electronic Arts shuts down the open source SimCity 2000 fan remake

Electronic Arts has taken down the open source fan remake of SimCity 2000, OpenSC2K. According to the DMCA notice, OpenSC2K uses assets from SimCity 2000 and since these assets are under copyrights, they should not be used in free remakes or projects.

The good news here is that EA is willing to allow this project once the team removes the assets that were ripped from SimCity 2000. As the notice reads.

“The current audiovisual output of the repository creates content that infringes on Electronic Arts copyright. As long as that continues to happen, no other changes other than removal is sufficient to address the infringement.”

So yeah, this is not the end of this project. It will obviously take a while until the team replaces the copyrighted assets but – as already stated – the publisher will not attempt to shut down this project as long as it doesn’t use any assets (both audio and visual) from the original game.
