Square Enix has released two new patches for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider that remove the Denuvo anti-tamper tech. Moreover, and as promised, these new patches add support for the latest version of the NVIDIA DLSS tech.
Going into more details, this new update for Shadow of the Tomb Raider updates DLSS to its latest version and adds an improved shadow denoiser for use with ray traced shadows. Additionally, it fixes specific compatibility issues with Intel GPU hardware.
On the other hand, the patch for Rise of the Tomb Raider adds DLSS and brings various stability fixes, especially when using DX12.
As always, Steam will download these updates the next time you launch its client. Below you can also find their complete changelogs.

One point to make is these Denuvo contracts are pricey af. Given they’re a monopoly in the industry, a lot of devs don’t bother.
Its just another checkbox to be presented to the publisher in order to secure marketing fund.
Those Publishers need to look like they are doing something to fight piracy to the Board of Directors.
I think removal of denuvo means they will release it on GOG soon because other TR games got released there too few days ago
which ones? The old ones are there arent they/
The last two
LAU trilogy + 2013 one.
Lets hope, gog always gets my buy first due to their “drm can die on a pile of burning tiers” approach. Sure some drm’s aren’t invasive… but what happens when the auth server dies or you get an cpu config that causes issues later on with the drm… while the game would been able to run just fine without that garbage…
Rumors are that for instance Alder lakes asymmetrical core’s / schedulers will cause issues with more than one type of drm and have to be updated – Would not surprice me at all
Well done.

Bet it was 4-5 years since i saw the last bsod (beside when doing insane oc’s)
to sell it in Gog?? nice try
Funny how Alder Lake = ADL(Anti Defamation League).

All 3 recent Tomb Raider games have been updated to “Run Epic Online Services (EOS). Players are now required to connect their Steam account to an Epic account in order to play.”, this is a new epic service that have been deployed to hundreds of new and old games out of nowhere to spy on people, funny how people are ignorant about this fact here lol
Not sure how much sh**tier SE has to get before everyone opens their eyes to what a cancer they are to customers, and have been for many years now.
I don’t call these a**holes EA Japan for no reason, nor lightly. They’ve earned it.
That’s why I’m really hoping that rumor about MS buying Crystal Dynamics from SE is true. CD deserves better.
Crystal Dynamics just posted this on Steam:
Please also note, linking your Steam and Epic Games Store accounts is entirely optional to make it easier to invite your friends to play multiplayer and co-op.
Players are reporting that indeed it is not required to play the games.
I was gonna say… That’s ridiculous.
I’d rather my epic account and steam account never be associated. I don’t care what anyone says.. epic is partly owned by tencent and tencent is REQUIRED to hand over user data.
Anyone foolish enough to think tencent doesn’t have access to epics data is insane. Tencent is the one who pays for all the exclusive deals and pays developers when they make a game free for a couple days. They have access.
That’s half the truth.
The linking is not required, but the Epic Service are executed at the start of the game and always try to phone home, hanging the game if the servers are unreachable for any reason.
This totally break the offline play, and make the game unplayable for users who decided to block Epic IP.
Uhm… I blocked the epic service when it was installed by EGS and it didn’t break Tomb Raider.
It’s time people stop using browser extensions for ads, trackers, and analytics and start using something system level like Adguard.
Good luck collecting data when you can’t phone home even though you allow it access in the firewall.
I blocked them in the windows host file, and the game is stuck at the profile check.
Anyway, the patch has been finally reverted yesterday.
No they aren’t required to connect them but I am skeptical about anything from epic due to tencent’s near majority ownership but again it’s not required to connect them. I downloaded both of them yesterday (before rise was pulled because of a bug) and connection was optional although I THINK (not sure) the service is still installed regardless.

That’s completely unhelpful without the results that show performance without DLSS
You must be doing something wrong because I get essentially the same performance on a 2080ti and a Ryzen 5800x. No… I get better performance actually; Now that I see your resolution.
Now do FF15 update to DLSS 2
Weird, I have have updates for all three of the Tomb Raider reboot games.
The first in the Trilogy just put Epic Online Services Integration in multiplayer.
So denuvo drm was the cause of these issues:
> Various stability fixes
> Fixed specific compatibility issues
Publishers that claim Denuvo doesn’t affect performance in any way are spreading BS. Any program running in the background like Windows or an antivirus or Denuvo is going to use CPU cycles, RAM, drive IO and in Denuvo’s case internet bandwidth. It may not be noticeable on a high performance PC but probably on a low end PC it is noticeable.
Generally speaking it’s not noticable on even a midrange pc except in a couple of instances. Until… 3 months or so ago I was running an i7 5820k. It’s a 6 core cpu and because I had an excellent example of the chip I could crank it to 5.4ghz from it’s 3.3ghz base. Of course I would run it at 4.4 to 4.6ghz so I wouldn’t kill it early.
Now I have a Ryzen 5800x… It’s much more modern, supports newer instructions, has significantly higher IPC, 2 more cores… But most games still run essentially the same on a 2080ti although I suspect anything released this year and some stuff last year absolutely run better now.
Of course when you talk denuvo you are talking about a drm system that uses on the fly decryption of certain game files which uses CPU resources but from my experience on the i7 I only lost performance when it was combined with VM Protect DRM (looking at you ubi soft).
I think a modern (last 4 years) 4 core 8 thread CPU or older like my 5820k with 6 cores 12 threads generally don’t have an issue with Denuvo if it’s been implemented properly.
So it doesn’t take the newest and best tech to have good performance with Denuvo.. what denuvo seems to need to more threads so it can do it’s job without interfering with the game.
Don’t get me wrong here, I wish games didn’t use it and not because it’s DRM but because if it’s not implemented properly like in say.. RE8 Village, then you get massive performance penalties. Hell even after Capcom had finally gone back and made some tweaks a month or so ago it still doesn’t run right on PC regardless of power.
Denuvo is owned by Sony BTW… It’s the same company that used rootkits to protect music cd’s… Rootkits that opened your PC up to all manner of nasty things and required a clean Windows install to remove. They have also made other PC drm systems that were intrusive and unreliable.
Denuvo is by far the best DRM they have made from a performance and user privacy perspective but it’s still not good enough and quite frankly shouldn’t be used.
CDPR has more than proven that a game without DRM can sell and make tons of money. More companies need to follow suit and gamers will show their appreciation when and if they do
Problem with most companies that employ draconian drm is that they have burned away all goodwill they ever had and that goodwill is a big part of why some companies can sell drm-free without getting major hits in sales.
Many people live by do right by me and ill do right by you while do wrong to me and ill do the same – So suspect if ubi cut the drm in the next title it would be pirated to hell and beyond due to paying customers are fed up by seeing the pirates gets the superior performing version and the ones who paid for it got the worse over and over…
It doesn’t matter dude, the morons still buy it. When they finally remove the DRM 6 years later, it works as a punch in the gutt for uptick new Sale. Doesn’t matter anyways moved over to gog exclusively for years now. So they can shove it where the algorithms don’t shine.
They don’t care. There are 10 people who replaced you when you moved to only buying on gog. There will always be people to replace other people simply because of kids growing up and being old enough to buy things.
If DRM gets a few thousand people not to pirate the game then it’s probably paid for itself.
It’s also VERY rare for denuvo to cause any issues in a game including performance loss. The 1-2% we see in most games is within margin of testing error.
I honestly don’t get the issue with it aside from performance loss for people with older (like 7+ years older) CPUs that have less than at least 8 threads.
I didn’t move to GOG or exclusively purchase DRM Free for “Them To Care”. I did it for my wallet and well being. Why would I give a damn if “10 people replace me”. I’m a grown @$$ man dude, I don’t make decisions for others to care. So I don’t know what you’re going on about. Simply put, I don’t purchase things I don’t own & that’s that. You don’t anything you purchase on steam or any other DRM platform. DRM platforms are a punch in the gutt to people and their wallets.
What’s draconian about denuvo? Compared to past DRM we have had to put up with Denuvo is pleasant.
Believe me whenever I can get a game without DRM I will always go with that version. So that generally means gog because I stopped pirating when buying a game didn’t eat up 1/4 of my paycheck..
Well… I may have copied a few gamefly games to my chipped original Xbox but shhhh lol.
I also may have pirated both Blur & SplitSecond but I own them both on disc but the Blu-ray drive in my PC isn’t actually hooked up because I only had a power cable with multiple sata power connector’s and I forgot to ever order a cable with a single connector but that’s it.
My soul feels clean now lol
Well, they need to sell their product, don’t they?! In the past we saw CEO’s of cigarrete companies testifing that nicotine wasn’t addictive, so they’ll say whatever dogshlt they need to sell, is up to you (us) to search for the truth.
Don’t forget Polio showing up after they douced people with DDT. These people better pray there is no GOD because they’re gonna pay dearly & painfully. Just 5 minutes of research and people will see that all these diseases/viruses were none existent until some corporation/government started some kinda Fuqery… But nah, people refuse to do the work in order to continue living in denial and fighting their fellow man.
Three years later…Squeenix are nothing but a bunch of bums at this point. Eat sh*t.
Update , denovu has not been removed , this post is wrong John , go check again & the new update is causing bugs like lara’s animation to be stuck in injured mode if we load earlier save , she always has her hand on her stomach however starting new game corrects this issue
The store page on steam https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/fa37d02884253b7715f39ac7243d68eab02d16f0deb2a96741debbebc2cb97ac.png still mentions that Denovo is there soo i don’t know
Check the exe… many devs are just to lazy to update things like the stores
they have rolled back the update due to glitches in save games
one more update they are rolling back the update after just several hours on steam

These games are trash reskins of barely playable TR9 anyway.
Have to agree with ya, pal! First one from this trilogy was decent. The rest is just cash grab using a famous name.
I hope this means they’re coming to GOG.
More important for me is, that they actually patched all 3 Tomb Raider games (including TR 2013, all in one day!) to include Epic Online Services. Some players are already having a lot of problems with this service, it seems to
require always being online. So I don’t know if this is a new type of DRM now for all these games? Can someone from Square Enix actually tell us:
— What is the purpose of integrating Epic Online Services to all 3 Tomb Raider games?
— What are the (supposed) benefits of integrating the Epic Online Service for Tomb Raider players?
— What will the players gain from EOS?
I mean, it had to take some effort (and money) to integrate EOS to all these games!
But… There is just no explanation. No justification. Just a simple patch note that could just as much say “we added this thing to your game no matter if you like it or not, deal with it”. This doesn’t sound too fair to consumers for me.
=================================
EDIT: Crystal Dynamics added a post after all these issues happened, with one sentence of explanation:
Please also note, linking your Steam and Epic Games Store accounts is entirely optional to make it easier to invite your friends to play multiplayer and co-op.
So it seems users are having problems when:
— They linked their Epic and Steam accounts at some point
— And they didn’t accept the permission for Epic to access their data during launching the game in the browser
If you don’t want to have those problems, you can:
— Unlink or don’t link your Epic and Steam accounts
— When you want to have them linked, accept the permission for Epic to access your data
I’d advise never linking them but that’s just me.. tencent can piss off. Yes I know they own stakes in other game companies, including Activision but they own almost a controlling interest in epic and if Tim Sweeney ever sells enough of his stock then they will own a majority share. Nope.. sorry, not funding the CCP. Oh and before anyone says they don’t fund the CCP should pay more attention… They just handed over billions to them. Them and every other large tech company from China.
The money is being used for weapons development and to attempt to prevent the real estate bubble from bursting because it’s been propping up the economy and outside investment in China for over a decade and all the companies have begun defaulting on loans.
Guess who they don’t payback? If you answered foreign investors you win.
I was hoping this was going to lead to a GOG release, but that’s not gonna happen. The game is forced online now; people on the steam forums say the game does not even start in offline mode because of the
TencentEpic Game Services. They just traded one type of DRM for an even worse type of DRM.hahahahah lol its funny because empress was paid 500 to crack the latest version of this.
HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHA
Oh well i guess it helps the cracking research progress.
Old news, the dude that payed for it change his mind way before this for Nier instead of Tomb Raider.
Loved the scene of old (C64/Amiga fairlight/razor for instance). They cracked the game for the challenge and fun, not money/fame hunting and the cracks back then were proper IE full strips not just what what often passes for cracks nowadays (spoofs the protection that its a legitimate copy IE the drm still consumes resources to run… there are naturally exceptions but seems to get rarer and rarer)
Epic is putting Chinese spyware in game’s now?
Now?!
LOL
Well first was the client but it wasn’t built in to the games themselves till now.
Oh, I got what you mean now.
The way things are going, all AAA games will come bundled with
Tencent SpywareEpic Game Services.Don’t care, cause they’re always free!
You don’t care about tencent, a company that is required to do whatever the CCP tell them to having a service constantly running on your PC?
Wow… Clearly you’re not old enough to be commenting. That or you’re really stupid.
Nope, the thing is very, very simple… Is my PC so I made the rules here, not you! See, simple as that!
^^
Nothing is free. I think the guy below has a good take on you. Nothing is ever free, not even piracy.
Alright, Plato, now fvck off!
These titles are already appearing on torrent sites. I’d suggest that is where you source them from rather than support EOS.
Epic, make piracy great again.

That’s a first for them. I wonder when will they do it for just cause.
UPDATE : SE has removed the DLSS from both TR games due to artifacts. The games have been returned to as pre-patch.
