Cyberpunk 2077’s sales have already exceeded its huge development and marketing costs

Yesterday, we informed you about Cyberpunk 2077 surpassing one million concurrent players on Steam. And today, we have some additional details about the game’s sales. According to CD Projekt RED, the game’s pre-orders and day-1 sales have already exceeded its huge development and marketing costs. In other words, Cyberpunk 2077 is profitable in just one day.

As CD Projekt RED has stated regarding the game’s day-1 sales.

“Pre-order sales of Cyberpunk 2077 across all of its digital distribution channels have exceeded the sum of the following:

  • total development expenditures related to the game, and
  • the game’s marketing and promotional costs borne by the Company – either already incurred or anticipated for the remainder of 2020.”

So yeah, the hype is real and Cyberpunk 2077 is selling like hotcakes.

In similar news, CD Projekt RED stated that Cyberpunk 2077 had surpassed 8 million pre-orders.

From those 8 million pre-orders, more than half were for the PC version. The pre-orders for all consoles were at 41%. This basically means that the PC has managed to outsell (at least when it comes to pre-orders) all consoles, combined.

Our PC Performance Analysis for Cyberpunk 2077 will go live this weekend. Until then, you can read our “Ray Tracing and DLSS 2.0 Benchmarks” article.

    1. mafia 3 sold well despite no denuvo and being a bad game, mad max sold well despite it was cracked fast and just cause 3 didnt despite it took over a year to crack it.

so yeah no link between denuvo and sales. NONE.

      1. Only some small percentage maybe but overall….. no connection. Even Among Us which is already 1-2 old game (on mobile free with adds) is selling like hell on Steam, even the cracked version of it can be connected to online servers but still selling good.

          1. It is in a way that this kind of games are perfectly playable on Phones and way before it was released on PC, its also free for mobile and if we speak about PC, even the cracked version can go online on PC (which for 99% other games iis not possible if you dont pay). Basically there is no reason for buying the game on PC because you can play online completely free of charge BUT ppl still buying the game on PC.

          2. You have a point, would be nice if other sucessful online games made pirate copies available without free to play garbage.

    2. They have way more data on DRM protected games selling good, that’s what consoles are for, DRM also protects the game against modifications, which a lot of publishers hate.

        1. If you can jailbreak a console, then sure.

“that’s the whole point of consoles in fact..”

I tought it was about playing exclusive games, or not being able to afford a decent PC…

          1. No…im pretty sure that the whole point of a console is being plug and play, the reason average joe sixpack buys a console to game on instead of a pc is because when he gets home after a 9-9 shift he just wants to plug the physical disc of the game he bought and simply play, no accounts, no online verifications, no updates, no installments, no nothing, just play.

            wtf man?

          2. Lmao you make it appear that pirating a game is rocket science, it is actually more complicated on modern consoles, sit down juan!

  1. Really? Preorders covered your costs? How cheap is it to make games in Poland?

Anyway i dont know who fooled who, as the game isnt that great and its filled with bugs to a extreme degree, like mass effect andromeda and it runs like crap.

Feels like the game was crowdfunded and its in early access

    1. “How cheap is it to make games in Poland?”

Isn’t you one of the f4ggots claiming they outsourced their jobs to California? Oh you also claim AAA games are dying lmao.

  2. Oh wow! someone on the Nexus made a mod for the forced TAA and it really
works! download it now if you don’t like that performance hogging
    blurry sh*t on your game

    1. Good info.. also this:
I found that it looked fuzzy running on my nvidia GPU so I disabled
motion blur, chromatic aberration, film grain and depth of field. Next,
created a couple of filters.Found this online and the game looks so much
      better.

      1. Open the Filter Settings with alt+f3 (in-game)
      2. Add “Details” filter
      3. Set Clarity to around 70% and everything else to 0%
      4. Add “Sharpen” filter
      5. Set sharpen and ignore film grain to 100%

  3. Yesterday there was like 11 people in my friend list playing it. No game ever made that number, except maybe TF2, but ALL people on my list are there cos TF2 trading

  4. Reviews on steam are Mostly Positive, I was expecting Very Positive or Overwhelming positive with CDPR fame, seems worrying.

  5. I dont think many of the 59% of PC gamers bought the game that CANT run at a decent framerate.

On the other hands, load of last gen conslow gamers were up for a rude awaking of 20fps ..

  6. I will wait for a true ps5 version, otherwise, i will play it on pc, if I manage to build a ryzen 5950x/rtx3090 pc, by jan-feb 2021.

I am sure this game will be my ++game of the century++ , and will become my fav game ever, after mass effect 1-2-3.

But even if I’m a fan, i need to say this:
We now understand why the embargo was so short and strict, and youtube channels like ‘Dreamcastguy” had to remove their video review, even if he bought a license and didn’t sign any kind of nda:
Had some reviews been published 2 or 3 days before the launch day, we can be 300% SURE at least 10 or 20% of the ps4/x1 pre-orders WOULD HAVE BEEN CANCELED…! If not more.
The backlash would have been so intense, that even some pc folks might have canceled it as well…

I’m kind of “happy” the game runs like horse sheit on consoles, and even a high end pc with a rtx3090 can only run at 4k60 with half the graphical options at “high”, and raytracing max quality runs under 10 fps… that means graphics, map size, polygon count, lights, EVERYTHING is true next next gen, probably 1 or 2 hardware generations ahead of time, and the designers had no limits …

If the game could run at 4k60 on a ps4 or x1, that wouldn’t mean the game is super optimized..but instead, it would mean the game was using low quality assets, low res textures, few polygon count, poor ai, poor Antialiasing, very few characters and npcs, poor lights and shadows, in a big world 90% filled with empty areas.

BTW, gta5, 8-10yo, when run on pc, with a photorealistic mod, it looks like a real city.
Now,Seeing how amazing, nextgen, hyper detailed cyberpunk 2077 already looks without raytracing and most graphic options set only at very high or high, how the F%u^c&k% is it going to look, 2 or 4 years from now, when a rtx 4090 or rtx5090 super/titan card will allow playing at 4 or 8k, 60fps, nextgen raytracing ultra, with all options at ultra, with a absolute 8k photorealistic textures mod enabled ?

All this said, I understand how a ps4 or x1 owner might feel disgusted, pissed, infuriated…while playing cyberpunk…
No matter if CDPR had delayed the game 3 or 6 extra months, and tried to polish and optimize it a bit more, there’s simply not enough juice on those systems to run the game properly.
Heck, even a high-end pc can barely run it… how could that tiny POS with 1.7tflops, slow 1.8ghz cpu and average-low spec gpu even run it ?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the ps4 version was running at 600 or 500p upscaled to 1080p…

  7. so why can’t sony profit on $59.99 titles? lol

i live in the bargain bin, i’ll go back to not caring now.

  8. Well, personal opinions of the game itself aside, I think it’s safe to say that games without DRM, sell just fine.

You just have to make games that players actually want. Whether you want it this or not, and I really kinda don’t care for it myself, it is nice to see DRM-free games, blow the competition out of the water.

Meanwhile, the dinosaurs over at Sega, think Denuvo is going to garner them a few extra pennies on the upcoming Persona game.

    Lesson learned, Sega. Well done.

    1. Japanese publishers are still being lead by dumb dinosaurs. Look at Nintendo.

Sega’s dinosaurs were shocked when they noticed Persona 4 PC sales.

      1. The real dinosaur here is Atlus and some of their other partners, SEGA has been quite PC friendly for more than 2 decades, as for Denuvo, most of the publishers using it are western publishers

      2. sega copyrighted striked total biscuits videos with their games to remove them and put new videos in the top of the search results to promote their game. Its relevant because all the early cyberpunk videos were copyright striked by a group called “anti piracy” for cd projekt red.

    2. its surprising how the pc preorders are higher than the console preorders and it covered the cost while the game was basically cracked day one, or more accurately the first timezone the game was released for…the exe was uploaded to the internet for everyone else.

Meanwhile everyone puts denuvo on everything and they dont sell.

      1. Many have that misconception that’s mainly due to the fact that steam and epic don’t disclose sales and publishers rarely do. PC sales are really strong pretty much each darn time all the beans are spilled.

As for the DRM, make a good product and the consumers will get it. Sell a sub-pair product to the paying customers by assuming all are criminals and thus riddle it with performance tanking drm vs the real criminals who get an way better experience out of the game – Look at the UBI titles for instance, plenty of solid evidence their drm scheme in most of their games tank performance (seen up to 15% cracked vs original same version) when they combine protect vm, protect that vm with denuvo and on top of that you(dont)play or whatever its called these days.

How many wants to pay for an inferior product? You are already a criminal in their views and deserve something less than the actual criminals get – Who wants to pay for that?

        1. check out that fenyx rising game. Indie graphics, despite thats its a full priced game…and it has microtransactions…..and a season pass.

          Milk me harder daddy ubisoft.

          Its disgusting.

        2. The CEO of Ubisoft claimed around 8 years ago that 95% of PC gamers were pirates. They apparently still believe that because they load up their games with DRM.

Even if there really was that much pirating going on Ubisoft still makes hundreds of millions of dollars from PC gamers every year.

Some Publishers just don’t get it that a pirated copy doesn’t equal a lost sale every time.

          1. Yeah, UBI is among the worst to employ draconian drm’s. Pretty much all their titles are having performance issues vs whats displayed on screen and there are several tests of the same versions drm’s vs cracked- The difference have been between 10-15% in many cases and that’s a lot of eaten performance their paying customers have to suffer due to that draconian stance.

I would not be surprised if UBI actually looses sales due to the drm, let me elaborate – The performance the drm eats make many of their games loose the immersion factor and it’s widely known how bad their titles behave so many chose the superior experience and simply spite of ubi’s stance alone.

          2. Some Publishers try to make the claim that DRM doesn’t affect game performance but this is simply not possible. Any program running in the background is going to eat some CPU cycles, some RAM, some disk IO and some bandwidth. Whether it is Windows or an antivirus or DRM.

          3. Everything eats resources but you can get fairly close to zero impact from drm yet get ok protection, for instance protect the initialization of the game through denuvo while the main loop and it’s subs are unprotected – The price for that kind of protection is slower startup BUT basically zero impact once the game is running. Problems are companies who employ draconian drm on very frequently used code, that tanks performance and sometimes big times like UBI like to prove over and over

    3. One single ovehyped game sells well: “Yup, that concludes games without DRM sell great”.

Can’t wait to pirate this garbage… actually, i can wait, even with the crack already in place.

    1. Yes.. mainly because the top websites like ign, gamespot, polygon, etc, followed by at least 50 million gamers, who often, if not always rely on their reviews to buy a game..or not, WALK hand in hand with the big studios, and won’t hesitate giving a 9 or 9,5/10 to a game, even if that game is 100% built around monetization, requires 250 hours of intense grinding, and will steal 300, 3000 or even $30’000 from gamers.

You can be sure if those websites didn’t receive free review keys, free collector editions, tons of goodies, free merch, invitations for exclusive betas and alphas, maxed out characters with infinite resources, invitations for exclusive premieres/announcements, etc etc, and hated the microtransactions as much as we all do, their reviews would be like:
      – ok, broken/incomplete game out of the box, requires 50gb day1 patch ? -1
-ok, the game has tons of glitches, freezes, reboots, corrupted save files ? -1
Ok, there are 15 game versions, and it requires 20 bucks to play 2 days earlier? -1
Ok, so you removed 30% of the final content, just to serve it as 2 $19 dlcs ? -1
Ok, gamers need to grind for 80 hours, to reach level 4, without buying “game accelerators” ? -1
Ok, so, the game is crippled with ads, asks to buy ingame credit to buy new armors, guns, etc ? -1
Ok, so, the game runs like crap, looks awful, isn’t optimized ? -1
      Etc etc etc..

If, at the end, that freakin game ended up with a 5 or a 4/10, instead of 9.5/10, maybe 40 or 50% less people would buy it, and people would spend less money…
But today, EA can grab the exact same fifa19 game, update some logos with a ‘2020’, upscale all the gamers, and call it fifa2020,
The big websites will still give it a 9,5/10 or 10/10 !

      1. It all started with Horse Armor in Oblivion 14 years ago. A lot of people laughed at that DLC but now we see Publishers making more money from cheap DLC than they do from the games themselves.

    2. Sort of this yeah, Jedi Fallen order doesn’t even remotely make them as much money as FIFA does. It makes them enough to recoup dev costs and a decent profit, but it can’t compare to stuff like FIFA and Battlefield

  9. its funny how most of the top selling games are drm free or have day 1 crack and publisher still thinks piracy kills sales when the data is in their faces. If the game is good it will have sales simple as that.

    1. Top selling games on PC are mostly online only, free to play or MMORPG, single player games with day 1 crack are the exception on the list of best sellers.

    2. They are also online multiplayer, MMORPG or Free to play, single player games are outliers, for every Witcher 3 or Half life 2 you have 10 online games.

    1. i love the writing in it. its made me laugh so many times and actually talks like real people do. not watered down garbage to sell to snowflakes

  10. Built for high-end PCs with “old-gen” graphics that even high-end GPUs struggle to run maxed out? Don’t make me laugh.

  11. Don’t believe it! Because PC gamer are bunch of pirates just like that frenchy guy at ubisoft said…and multi layer drm is the future of gaming industry…
