BioWare Shuts Down After 30 Years, and Mass Effect 4 Canceled

EA has just announced its plans to close BioWare. Yup, you read that right. BioWare is no more. Not only that, but the next Mass Effect game, Mass Effect 4, has been canceled. Instead of letting another studio develop it, EA has decided to pull the plug and cancel it.

Now, I know that there is a meme about EA acquiring studios and then closing them. But, in this case, the closure of BioWare should not come as a surprise. Anthem was a huge commercial failure. Despite that, BioWare survived and got another chance with a new Dragon Age game. But Dragon Age: The Veilguard was another big failure.

In its statement, BioWare claimed that the next Mass Effect game was still in early development. What the hell? EA and BioWare announced Mass Effect 4 in November 2020. That’s six whole years ago. And the game was still in early development?

I don’t want to be mean or anything like that, but the BioWare we all loved had vanished long ago. BioWare was just a shell of its former self. There is a reason Anthem and Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed. So, the writing was on the wall.

I feel for the devs who have lost their jobs. Usually, the issues are with the top executives and not with the devs. But the “BioWare magic” was nowhere to be found in the last BioWare games. It was a different BioWare.

So there you have it. An end of era. But hey, at least in this case, I don’t blame EA for closing BioWare. BioWare had its chance, and it has failed to deliver. As I said, everyone saw it coming. And, to the surprise of no one, it happened!
